i was amazed of the structure of auda and ausreg once i became aware of it just a few years ago, for the previous 10+ years i honestly believed it was a governing body.
but in actual fact i believed that it was a government body that conducted business via MelbourneIT, thats how naive the average person is to understanding what is going on with their domain name future.
i thought MelbourneIT was top of the tree and sooooooooooooooo many of my clients have thought the same because most my new clients pay the silly $147 they charge.

Not sure I follow, but MelbourneIt was the top of the tree for a while. They predate AUDA by a long time and the "government body" isn't all that far off initially.

ok, so how i see it is, in 2000 i registered a domain with MIT and created an online business, then it was many years before i entered this present state of auda, drop, nf , netreg, crazyd, etcccc, somewhere @ 2011-2 i think.
i was just doing "my own thing"

Neddy over at domainer.com.au has come off the sidelines to ask a few questions of one of the other panel members public stance.

Brett Fenton claims domainers have a vested interest but with the prospect of 2.5 million defensive registrations coming up, forgets to acknowledge his vested interest. Ka ching!

everybody has a vested interest, but once again i'll say, very few domain owners know about this which is going to cause problems down the track.

And suddenly a flurry of posts. And look who's posting - Melbourne IT and Ausregistry. Hmm. Where's David? Or has he been muzzled...

When contacting clients, don't forget to ask them who else they know in their industries that would be interested in taking the survey.
i contacted one client today and he is part of a buying group of 40 businesses, just 1 phone call and email to then inform another 40 DOMAIN NAME OWNERS, yes NOT domainers as we are being tarred with, business people.
i simply can not phone all the people my "6 degrees of separation" has, but i can get an email to them.

Here's some numbers to consider.

97% of current Aussie domains are .com.au or .net.au.

A large number of these owners are going to be forced to make defensive registrations.

In real dollar terms that is as much as 97% of 3 million domains x say $23 registration costs = $66.9 million every two years.

It could be as bad as $436.5 million if they register via Melbourne IT ($149.99 ouch).

Current owners are going to be taxed to enable individuals can get a .au domain because they're too snobby to get a .id.au or too lazy to type .com.au?

You'd think that with such a massive issue auDA could email those 97% of their clients who are about to be stuffed over.

They have their emails and it is a big issue, so why not auDA?

Ned reckons they think they would be seen as spamming. WTF really?

<Insert a John McEnroe meme> "YOU CANNOT BE SERIOUS!!! </>

I don't think many domain owners would really want to be getting email from AUDA. The spamming issue is valid because near 0% would have signed up for any AUDA emails.

every single person i have contacted has said "thank you for letting me know" and every one is against it.
when there is a federal election my letter box becomes FULL , so the "we don't want to spam" is crap
"0%" , F me, 99.99% don't know auda exists and thats the way they like it.

A very small percentage would see it is spam - the vast majority would no doubt be thankful to know what is going and have the chance to voice their opinion.
