How popular are the .net.au domain names

Actually I registered a .net.au domain last week (so now I have 2 of them :eek:). It was free through VentraIP for existing customers.

Was it worth a minute of my time to register? Possibly. Will I buy any more for $1 each? Probably not.

The domain I got was SciFi.net.au. I ran one of my lists and it looked like one of the better ones available... but somehow I still have buyers remorse and I didn't even pay for it! :p

what about renewal in 2 years :p

p.s how do you delete posts ?

I haven't posted in a while, but saw this thread and felt I had to come out of exile. (Simply to save fellow domainers some money ;))

Have to say I'm with Snoopy - and speak from spending years in the trenches.

Have a read of this old thread in entirety. https://www.dntrade.com.au/domain-appraisals/6596-trailers-net-au.html?highlight=trailers.net.au

This was my "Road to Damascus" with regards .net.au domains.

Great read very eye opening but that was 2 years ago and i would say more domains were available back then compared to today would i be right in saying that?

And the valuation would be decided by which big and small players wanted it the most in that case it seemed to be a small player game.

Also there is still an unknown factor with all names thats why the prices are still very much subjective and not known until the free market decided.

thus making it a speculative investment

I see this as being like the classic view of gold and silver.

.au = Platinum
.com.au = Gold
.net.au = Silver
org.au = bronze

It don't think it is anything like that.

.com.au - this is not the "gold standard". It is what everyone uses, well almost everyone. There is nothing premium about the extension. Value comes from the combination of popular extension and strong keyword, not just extension.

.net.au - It is not "premium". It is more like giving your girlfriend a cheezel ring than giving here a silver ring.

.org.au - This isn't 3rd best, it is an extension restricted to non profits. It isn't a choice unless you are a non profit.

If net.au was a valid alternative why would you want/need to discount it down to $1?

Dirt cheap prices/free domains have just served to devalue the extension that they are promoting in the past. I see no reason for this to be different.

Well this exercise on Trailers.net.au was done when there had been a few good sales on the extension.

So given that it was a single word generic with great search, it should have sold for more. The absolute majority of fellow DNTraders thought so too (except for Snoopy).

And I really worked hard trying to sell this (mainly to prove Snoopy wrong ;)) - but as you can see, it was to no avail. The market spoke.

Liquid, I no longer believe in the merits of .net.au. Yes I still have some to protect the .com.au; but even this is no longer important to me.

Given that you're so bullish on net.au; would you like to buy some at cents in the dollar? Please PM me for a list if you do. ;)

E.g. would you like realestatesydney.net.au - 18,100 exacts - you (or anyone else) can have it for just $250 + GST + COR. Bargain.

I do have one making hundreds a month but that's not exactly just a domain the rest I am most likely going to let drop and I was once bullsih on net.au also.

Now I stick with .com.au com don't mind some .co and .us

totally disagree, its a waste of time, better to think of something else

tim

Can you explain why this is a 'waste of time' if you're a plumber and you're name is Joe? If you have no intention of ever selling the domain name, and assuming there is no SEO penalty for the net.au extension, and assuming this is not just a big conspiracy by auDA to create demand for a new .au space, what possible objection could you have to this domain name?

I sold a net.au for over $3k a few years back, but it did have some good content on it.

I don't bother with them now, although I did hand reg tradie.net.au today after it went through the drops without a bid. :D
