i suppose when calculated together these two extension scraped in a measly $1m+ in gross revenue - I'de say the tax payer hasnt received any net gain from its implemnetation. More likely registrants in this space are still trying to figure out how best to utilise it. (way to restrictive to succeed) pays for the staff christmas party perhaps...lol

The two state governments would have blown many millions on this. Wouldn't surprised me if it was $5-10million each. Maybe someone can do an FOI request?

They have spent a lot promoting it, fees to the registry, Icann, staff costs. Imagine Boardman's salary, he was on the staff of .melbourne. The very frequent radio ads alone would have cost a fortune.

Ausregistry played this one very well indeed.

the first .com i ever bought and it was my 2nd domain purchase was from an american, 2001 $700 so that was good money back then i think?
anyway i paid and then NOTHING, 16 emails later , many promises and NOTHING, finally after 12 months i sent him an email.
" happy birthday ! , you have now had my money for 12 months but i don't have the domain"

i got the domain about 2 weeks later
i seriously thought i'd done my money. a few years later and i still didn't know about domaining or drops or dnt/nf/drop the domain dropped because of an email stuff up by me and thus its gone......... ohh well ! live and learn, it wasn't a GREAT domain, just one i liked at the time.

PLEASE do not buy that .vision name for them even at $400. Get them to invest in a .com.au or .com or as you know they are pis^ing their money and their reputation away. In your position you really would have an obligation to advise them against it and why etc. In many cases they will not know what you know or the failure stats or reputation risk of a crappy extension to a company etc

yep, no amount of promotion or price discounting looks like it will help.

It's an enormous uphill battle for any new extension. They need constant marketing. Think about a .car domain? well you need to think about obtaining .cars .auto & then there's .com or .com.au (& impending .au) typo redirect.

The more similar extensions that are released to your market segment the harder it is to stand out..

Yes, and then some of those are very expensive. Imagine the shock when you learn some are $3500 per year or when your names get repriced by the registry.

A shame premium gtld names don't carry an average premium renewal price, so we can gain a better understanding of 'value', this is a big factor in purchasing imo
