iTWire recently published an opinion piece on this. Worth a read as he raises some good points - however he does make some assumptions that may not necessarily be correct. e.g.

But the argument that this shows there will be little demand for defensive registrations isn't very convincing, especially when one of the possibilities is that registration requirements for .au will be more relaxed than for .com.au. Surely that would mean existing registrants couldn't rely on existing policies to protect their names, and so they would increasingly turn to defensive registrations in .au, even if they didn't feel the need to register the .net.au name that corresponds to their .com.au.

Also some interesting comments for and against on Whingepool. (Mods - hope you don't mind me putting in this link, but it is relative to our discussion here).

Ahh yes plenty of opinions available Ned. With such a broad section of business and non-business world already holding a domain name licence, there are available to the same extent as many opinions. Of course it is not surprise that those who have investments in domain names are more inclined to respond to the issues paper. The more responses the better, and the more constructive the feedback, the more the issues will be listened to.

I personally hope the .au rules not be relaxed, should .au open up.
It is what gives .au its acceptance and 'trust' amongst businesses doing business with others..
