How popular are the .net.au domain names

Then why have them at all?

The TLD is there, people use it.

I think you may be mistaking WORTHLESS for useless ;)

i've said it before, i only own the .net.au's of my very best domains, if i ever sold the .com.au then the .net.au would just be bundled in

This is still a worthless > useless issue which isn't being acknowledged :p

hmmm, worthless v useless hmmmmm

we need a wiki and a poll, this keeps coming back over and over again and the "old boys" keep telling us "don't do nets and hypens" i'm paying attention.

even if you own creditcards.net.au you are going to spend sooooo much money in dev for the benefit of the .com.au owner

the .com.au owner is never going to buy it off you eg: drop.net.au

so yes its worthless.

useless: yes, its useless, what are you going to do with it? park it? and hope for ppc ? many members have already said that doesn't work for them as most exacts are to the .com.au

use it as a link to another site? well google killed that.

sell it: "hi my names tim, i own dubbodentist.net.au....... yeh, i was to late in getting DD.com.au as your competitor down the road has it now.....actually they have a nice site... anyway... i'm looking to sell this .net.au , do ya want it" ?

client: " what would i do with it"?

"WELL you could promote it extensively via traditional media but unfortunately most of the traffic will go to your competitor, OR you could spend thousands on SEO trying to get better organic traffic which would just confuse people and maybe your clients will actually show up to your competitor for their appointment, or you could spend MORE money doing adwords to make sure you get above them on the search term but probably still your patients will end up at your competitor when your adwords daily balance runs out and your competitor organic listing appears when they want to check the address before leaving home the next day."

"hmmmm, come to think of it, if you pay the COR, you can have it"

Tim,

Why do you own the .net.au of your very best .com.au domains?

firstly, i own the ones i could get, but why? basically because of paranoia, if auda go down the path of introducing only .au then i am the only candidate for that domain.

so brand protection really

all the other domains i'm not concerned about as it would be a complete waste of money.

Wow, just logged in again after a few weeks and was amazed to still see this going.

@findtim

Stay on topic. The thread is "How Popular are the .net.au Domain Names" not "What does Tim Think of .net.au Domain Names and the People that Register Them". Either add value, or start a new thread.

Who are the old guys you refer to? Do you make all your decisions based on what the old guys tell you to? Just because you can't think of a way (or haven't been told a way by 'the old guys') to use a .net.au doesn't make them worthless to everyone.

Have you considered that people use them differently to the methods you've given? Just maybe, there are more options than the ones you know?

Perhaps if you started listening you'd hear something you could use to come up with your own strategy rather than just following what old guys post on forums?

I recall Larry Bloch when CEO of NetRegistry said in an article that aftermarket sales of .com.au was worthless. He then went on to put his sticky fingers all over NetFleet. Lucky not everyone blindly followed that old guys advice.

http://www.zdnet.com/aussie-domain-aftermarket-stalls-1339290816/

Larry Bloch, CEO of Netregistry, one of Australia's largest domain name registers said that the system was bound to fail.

"Compared to the '.com' domain name space there isn't the economics to support ... the domain name after-market, which is largely driven by domain name monetisers," Bloch said.

According to Bloch this is because the number of visitors to ".com.au" domain names was smaller than for ".com" names, while the cost of registering them was higher. This left what Bloch termed "cyber-speculators", who registered common names in the hope that they would be worth more in future.

"These are the people who tend to think that domain names are worth a hell of a lot more than they actually are," Bloch said.

In my experience Troy, good threads sometimes divert down sidetracks for a while. A different take on things can ultimately be beneficial to the subject at hand.

I don't like threads I've participated in being hijacked and individual opinions being given as facts.

In findtim's defence, I don't think he has hijacked the thread at all. Everyone is entitled to their opinion.

I don't agree with some of the things you have stated Troy, but I respect your right to ventilate them.

That's what a forum is for - people give their various points of view - and we can all come to our own conclusions.

As for my opinion on this thread topic, I am not a fan of net.au domains any longer. I said this very clearly at post No 43 on this thread; and I gave an example why.

https://www.dntrade.com.au/newbies/...-net-au-domain-names-post66830.html#post66830

They do not suit my business model. But if they suit your business model (or the business model of other people), then good luck to you. I wish you well.

Sorry @Neddy; we have a difference of opinion. Sorry @FindTim for raising the issue and if I was too direct. Sorry @FindTim if I inadvertently do it again below.

Frankly I grew tired of the the repeated posting that all net.au's are worthless and a waste of money in response to other members posting they have registered one.

The thread didn't ask for amateur valuations of other people's domains or indeed, all .net.au domains as a massive generalisation.

Why would anyone post to this thread if they're just going to be portrayed as an idiot by someone that has no idea about their strategy?

I didn't like the negative responses to on-topic posts. I raised the issue.

Hopefully the sun will still rise tomorrow.

as neddy said,
HTML:
we can all come to our own conclusions

if you read my posts late in this thread they are actually responses to members questions being asked of me and why.

this is where a thread can diverge from the topic, perhaps at that point we should have created a new thread.

so lets more on.

Having read the discussions above, would anyone's opinion on .net.au values change if it was a short generic keyword domain name, e.g.
  • a tech related short noun (weren't .net.au 'supposed' to be for the tech sector?)
  • a generic noun like carpet
  • a generic service related noun e.g. domainservices

i doubt it, especially in the current climate.
i think if .au comes in then .net.au value will drop even further, we can't blame the instigators of .net.au they did what they thought best back then.........it didn't work and there comes a time when you just have to let it die.
the really stupid thing is todays "breed" want to duplicate that mistake wit having a .com.au and a .au alive , one has to die imo

lotto.net.au sold for $12k on the drops today, so some people are most definitely seeing value in them!

even with a name like that i don't think there is 12k value in it, pointless promoting it as it will bleed to the com
you'd need deep pockets and a strrong PPC strategy.

Thank you kindly for your replies so far.
Would 3 letter .net.au domain names make any difference to the opinions and ideas you've given above?
