What is your best revenue stream?

I have a handful of quality domains to develop and wanted to here some feedback on the best methods used to monetize a domain.

A. Adsense

B. Direct Advertising

C. Affiliate Programs

D. Products Sales

E. Service Sales

F. Subscriptions / Membership

In addition to this, what would you class as an average return for each of your domains?

A. $0-100 / Month

B. $100-250 / Month

C. $250-500 / Month

D. $500-1000 / Month

E. $1000 +

My best has been a finance site (that i've since sold) I took direct finance enquiries that were CC'd directly to a broker who then weaved their magic.

I received commision on all successful loan signups.

Was making around $1500 a month for almost 18 months before I sold it to the broker and moved on to other things.

I am considering doing something similar again.

This was a point that always bothered me.

I created a backend on the site for status updates, so I was always kept up to date when the broker made progress.

And the thing was they were my clients and I always had the option of follow up calls, but never did.

I tried to be as hands off as I could be.

It was hard finding a broker that took it serious at the start. I had one that let leads sit there for weeks before even looking at them.

Once I found one that was serious, it all went quite well.

It really depends on what the domain is, using multiple revenue streams is good, as well as testing out as many as you can to see what gives you the best return.

As an example CurrencyTrading could go for adsense, subscription (to trading strategies), direct advertising, affiliates. Whereas CarParts would be best to sell product or direct advertising. You should definitely not cross any options off the list until you evaluate each domain.

From my experience it's hard to get direct advertising from an industry which is not up to speed with online sales or marketing on the internet. e.g. carparts

You would be surprised, take a look at a lot of the car forums about and checkout all the sponsorship deals they have with car parts makers, mechanics, etc.
ls1.com.au and calaisturbo.com.au are prime candidates

I don't think you would get away with building a thin site for that domain.

It needs to be something special to attract advertisers. Sounds like a lot of work but if it's the number one resource for all things car parts then it could be hugely profitable.

Yeah I am facing that hurdle with some of my A+ .com.au domains.
ClassifiedAds.com.au will be the easiest of mine to build out, but such a competitive market.

Yeah, and the problem with ClassifiedAds wouldn't be development, which is fairly trivial compared with CarParts.com.au, it would be monetization (with so many free classified sites around).

Classifieds could be hard. You'll have to develop something silky smooth which is easy to use if you want advertisers to use your service.

How do you compete against boatpoint, tradingpost and all of the small topic specific sites out there?
