What's new

Massive day on the drops Thursday

Drop.com.au

Top Contributor
Wines.com.au
Films.com.au

And a whole bunch more. Wines.com sold for $2.9 million in 2004. It is going to be a very interesting day...

Cheers

I think Wine.com sold for 2.9 million not wines.com, cant find the source for that sale.

but yeah these domains are great.

Wouldn't think it would make too much difference.

The big question is will it set a new record for highest amount bid at DROP?

I'm betting it will and I'm interested to see how far north of $20,000 it will go.

Never really hear people talk about wines as much as they do wine. Big difference there and the search volume for wines (590) vs wine (4400) reflects that quite well. Over hyped domains once again. Getting a bit sick of it too, see it every day with the Drop mail out claiming key-word domains are getting a certain volume when it's obviously keyword is (that's not to say these domains are worthless just perhaps a bit pumped up like a stock).

Massive difference in my view, the usual plural of wine is wine. Wines sounds clumsy to me, should get a decent price but a long way off the worth of wine.com.au.

Films.com.au is an interesting one, the term does sound somewhat dated though, I don't think anyone under about 40 would use the term.

I dont think the person buying Wines would matter much about Wine vs Wines. Its very brandable still and can be developed into a good retail or comparison site under the right company.

wine.com.au would be worth far more than wines.com.au. Cant see it going above $20k as not enough people even know about drop.com.au and the auctions to make it get higher... Maybe thats a good thing.. we can still pick up the odd bargain here and there!

"Films" wouldnt be worth more than a few thousand at the very most.. If it was "Movies".. the price would be high.

For domain like this you need to look at the phrase match not exact match to see its potential.

If I had the choice I'd opt for wine.com.au as well. Though if both were for sale and the singular was priced 100% higher than the plural version, I'd tell I'd opt for the plural.

The $8,000 bid so far says that it's not over hyped.

:D

Wine.com sold for $3.3 Million in 2003...
redwine.com - $150,000 (2010)
wine.tv - $17,000 (2010)
wines.net - $13,000 (2008)

Makes me question whether wine.com really did sell for $3.3 million when the dot net sold for $13,000 5 years later.

Stuff the comparison site or a develop a site under a wine company.

When I see a name like this I get visions of a RealEstate.com.au style business ie a company that is built around the value of the domain itself. It has serious potential to be a stand alone brand.

Cant see it going above $20k as not enough people even know about drop.com.au and the auctions to make it get higher... Maybe thats a good thing.. we can still pick up the odd bargain here and there!
Not unless DROP has been out cold calling some big Aussie wine companies with an internet marketing division. You only need two of them to rock up and we could see a price well above $20,000.

I wonder if Fosters group will bid on wines.com.au.. they own others like spirits.com.au and beer.com.au even $100,000 for them would be nothing to pay.

I noticed Online Marketing Group / Fairfax Media www.omg.com.au owns www.wine.com.au. They would be sitting on a gold mine with that one

They have more gold mines than BHP and RIO.

The $8,000 bid so far says that it's not over hyped.

I should have been clearer but I meant over hyped domains that arrive in my inbox each day from Drop.

Example

I'm pretty sure baby-carriers is not being searched as often as baby carriers is. There are a couple of other key-word domains that arrive in the email everyday.

It's deceptive in my opinion. Whether it's intended to be so or not is another thing.

I think it's just a case of DROP algo not discounting the value of a domain if it has a dash in it. They probably should though. They should also consider reducing the value add of inbound links.
