What a massive scam. What will happen is people will no longer register or renew any "iffie" names. No use registering or renewing crap. Keep the best you have and let the rest drop now.
The "board" should be ashamed of themselves for stuffing up what was half working.
This is all about some people wanting to make more money.... Auda, Ausregistry, Registrars, IP Lawyers ... nothing else!
No demand as most people never even knew about it!
The 3 million existing .com.au and .net.au registrants where never emailed about it by Auda or Ausregistry!

- How about FREE CHANGE OF REGISTRANT using the remaining period of the domain name registration period now?

I'm on the record as saying I like the idea of shorter domains, but now that it's happening, I'm definitely feeling some concern on how it's going to be rolled out.

I own the net.au version for most of my good domains, so hopefully that offers a little protection.

My concern is they will blackmail existing registrants into defensive buying. SHAMEFUL

60% of respondents were too stupid to realise that if they own the .com.au, they will now have to register the .au and pay twice as much.

And have a redundant domain name that will never be used.

It seems likely some respondents thought they might have a chance at poaching "someoneelsesname.au".

I suppose registries and registrars will also push for more extensions. They want the $$$ and they will say what they want to push for it. Just look how many crazy extensions are around now and what a failure most have been the registries and registrars pushed to market

It is shameful the "Board" voted to push in the un needed .au extension. The board members who voted for it should be very ashamed.. but again they are obviously interested in the $$$. No solid stats at all say it is needed. All existing registrants should have been far better warned of it via numerous emails etc. Millions of people, small and large businesses will be affected.

Lets see who gets these names .. how about MalcolmTurnbull.au etc. There are plenty of people around called this. Can they get the .au what rights does the PM have they do not have if it is their name also?

1-5yr rego is not a "very big deal", pay now or pay later i'm happy with 2yr with my monitoring system, having to pay double IS avery big concern to me.
as for realestate.au, i hope auda go down the path of auctions and watch the lawyers fly into action, or throw in a .melbourne where certain names are more expensive, i went to buy a GOOD .melbourne only to be told someone would have to phone me , which they did and told me "the price is not $xx but $xxxxx" would they say my premium domains are a different price??

Hi Tim, I cannot see any implementation body recommending auctions for domains. You have to remember that the vast majority of registrants have about 1.2 domains, so the argument about paying double is not a real issue to anyone other than those of us who have portfolios of domains. I recognise that there are some good arguments against direct registrations but this is not one of them for the majority of people. And I do think that 1 to 5 year terms are a big deal. Personally I would love to be able to renew a domain for 1 year instead of paying for 2 years, improves my cashflow...

Will tomorrow's .com.au name drop allow an existing .net.au domain holder first choice in opting to register .au at the 2nd level..

Yes these changes to 1 to 5 years could flow on to higher costs to registrants due to changes required in the registry systems.

This is also a significant change to auDA policy.

1.2 domains per person, i'm sorry but thats not a good excuse to cause a doubling of fees because of defensive registrations.
it doesn't matter if its 1.2 or 1200 in my view.

you don't have to register twice as many domains - it is no different to the current situation where a .com.au owner feels they have to register the .net.au defensively.

Thanks for clarifying about the contractual obligations. I assumed there would be costs involved, but if they are under the current contract then that is a bonus for registrants.
