i can see the merits in just .au and sorry but i am going to harp my opinion forever.
if they switch/add just .au into the mix them the owner of the .com.au should not get "first dibs" .... they should be GIVEN the .au
if auda are going go down the path of .au based on useless excesses like " every other country is doing it" or " it will save typing " then they have to say " its not a money grab" otherwise IT IS.

Why? There is no precedent for this afaik. Probably because it is a bad idea. IIRC both .co and .uk had reasonable solutions.

why does their have to be a precedent? can't we be the first ? and their will be a precedent !
if you think my idea is a bad idea then you don't own many domains and haven't calculated the additional cost of acquiring the new .au space for the names you have + the unknown cost if you have to compete for it + the effects on a business if they DON"T acquire it + if they use a NF type blind bid system to deal the new namespace.

as for precedence i remember being in brisbane and they added a 3 to the front of my phone number, i didn't have to pay for that and i didn't have to change the rest of my numbers.
businesses however had change their trucks, shop fronts, business cards etc and yes there was a few years cross over but still an expensive exercise.

My existing "co.uk" portfolio of domains will be.. "automatically reserved" for me for free, for the next 5 years, until I choose to start using it.
I do think $1 "net.au" domains devalues the extension, and will result in massive drops in 2 years time. I'm only registering some as a defensive measure, to protect my existing .com.au's

Doesn't this just move the problem?
Won't this just give AuDA two 'second teir' 2LDs (com.au and net.au) to deal with, or are you suggesting these are closed? What do you then do for the two existing 2LDs when they're owned by different organisations?
And what about those organisations that have spent many years and lots of money building a brand around their existing domain name?

How is Nominet dealing with the situation where one organisation owns the co.uk, another owns plc.uk, another owns org.uk, another the me.uk, etc, etc?
