I have a good mate who is a born salesman and he is now selling electricity and gas

there will be NO pitch in this post so keep reading.

anyway he comes over as my contract is up for renewal and he saves me $100 a year and then tells me that my current provider will offer better and then i should ring his company and tell them that and then they will offer better !!!

obvious i know but we are to busy to think like that most times, anyway exactly that happened and i have a letter here today saying my current provider will give me a drop of 18% off my current electricity rate + $100 off my next bill, and 14% off my current gas rate + $50 off my next bill if i stay with them.

they even included a pre worded cancellation letter to the "new" provider for me to just sign and post in a pre paid envelope.

funny how there is never an offer until you want to leave !!!

hopefully others will get some milage out of this info.

They'd be mad to do it any other way. A bit like people who ask the boss for a raise and wonder why they don't get it. Only way to get a better deal is to be prepared to walk out the door.

Btw have found dodo power and gas to be about the cheapest in Vic at the moment, I tend to switch every 18 months or so.

Thankfully they (electricity/gas/phone if you still have one) don't slow down their system by real time checking the validity of pensioner discounts (###-###-###-X), not that anyone who isn't entitled to claim such a discount would claim one to begin with.

Got to say I've done more hours than I'd care to remember in this industry, working with both government and the private sector - especially in regards to pricing and frankly I'm still confused by it all.

In VIC one thing many people don't know is if you have been in the same house since 2001 or have moved into a house and don't sign up to a market offer then your retailer is only required to offer you a standing offer. These offers aren't very competitive.

Everyone should be on a market offer/contact. Most retailers have multiple market offers per distribution zone, but the way these are structured in terms of price varies from retailer to retailer. So confusing... and it's about to get a lot more confusing, but at the same time there will be new opportunities to save arising.

Unfortunately there is no easy way to get an accurate comparison (yet). None of the comparison sites I've seen are accurate. If you want a good deal, you could try ringing a broker like EnergyWatch, but as we know they're just affiliates and they have a vested interested in getting the maximum commission. From memory a very high % of customers sign with AGL.

Victorians can use yourchoice.vic.gov.au to get a fairly accurate comparison of prices, including discounts for your postcode. This website is kept up to date with current pricing, as required by legislation but the retailers aren't required to enter all their market offers (most do).

One way to go would be to phone EnergyWatch and then check the offer on the YourChoice website to see how competitive it is. I've seen this done, and the EnergyWatch salesperson came back with a better offer!
