I think all small business have a hard time making money. But you are right some are easier than others.
In addition to it possibly just being a bad idea the eBay affiliate program is also a concern. I read it's all a bit of a mystery.
I don't really have a good idea of how exacts, social media, paid advertising, organic ranking convert in to traffic. But as of now I am averaging 60 or so people a day with an average time of 5 minutes.
I sorta see it as a vintage fashion magazine. It is very mobile friendly (the formatting on right side is off and is being fixed) Currently it makes money from eBay affiliates. So I figure if I can get enough people looking it will convert.
Just doing this to see if it can make money. If it does I am going to introduce the ability for people to post fashionable items for sale on the site. Later if things go well some social media stuff like chiq(dot)com(dot)au
I do have high hopes. And obviously I would love for it to work, but if not it won't ruin me. The experience gained by this has been very rewarding.

I have noticed the international items, but i think the majority are Australian. Many of the items automatically change every 3 days so hard to keep track.
All eBay filters currently ARE set strictly to items locating in Australia. Sadly it probably is as good as is currently technologically possible.
Getting the feeds right is something still being refined. Ideally all categories will never have less than 13 items, but should average closer to 100.

Some business made nothing, some businesses make moderate amounts of money, some business make a lot. But all the businesses that do make money have a business model. This is the kind of site that is unlikely to amount to much in my view. There is nothing clear to latch onto and what is there at the moment is just affiliate stuff, there is no money in that.
How much money is it making that is all that counts. I can get 60 visits a day as well, stand in the middle of a street and watch 60 people walk by. Nothing wrong with having a go but I'm saying the foundations aren't there at all, so any talk of filter numbers or background design is just a waste of time.

Since I spotted Alexs' site and saw what it was I started looking into it (ebay affiliate) for my NoReserve.com.au domain. Early investigation says 30 days from the time people are reffered from your site.
Some people make good money from it, others say they are making nothing, I guess it all comes down to how you manage your site traffic to make sure that people coming back through you and not directly to Ebay (but still looking into this).
People that have set it up as a standalone and forget are the ones that make little money out of it (but do make something) because they (visitors) will tend to just go to ebay after you refer them.
You will need to find a way/reason to keep people coming through you as a portal as well as cash in on the new visitors I think to build on it.

you're right Jay, 30 day cookies SUCK.
i have a site where i'm getting afiliates in and i give them a 90 day cookie and STILL i have hardly had to pay any commission to them in over 5 years !! even though sales are steady and i have over 450 affiliates advertising my site.

Another thing too is that people are more switched on these days about cookies, histories etc bloating up their browsing experiences and use apps like CCleaner to fully clean out their caches and temp files (so your cookies get cleaned out too). I use CCleaner daily myself...another reason to keep returning traffic coming through your sites and refreshing those cookies

Thank you for looking and the constructive info.
I agree with everything you have said... The main site that has influenced me is collectorsweekly(dot)com.
More specifically there is a section on the site called Show & Tell where collectors share their stuff and people even build digital collections.
There is also another site chiq(dot)com (just recently found) that I could possible do something similar. Again I think it allows people to make digital collections.
If I am going to continue developing Hipster.com.au something similar to keep people coming back is what I am thinking.
I say if I am going to continue developing, because the only way I would even consider it is if the site makes some money as is.

Really even with over 450 affiliates advertising your site + 90 day cookies commissions are not a common expense?
Like nothing? Have they increased the traffic to your site?

While the keyword Hipster gets 9,900 Google exacts with cpc of $1.00. Hipster clothing gets 4,400 exacts. Google keywords also has over 60 suggested clothing and 15 fashion related Hipster keyword combinations.
Really nothing to latch on? The numbers seem to indicate clothing / fashion?
Would it be possible to give an idea of the foundations missing? I think there is a lot of good stuff working for it. It's up and running, should get decent traffic, and even though the content is all eBay items being sold I think it is interesting stuff.

Never to return? I have considered this. One idea I have would be to introduce some social media functionality into the site. Try to give people a reason to come back.
2 sites that are doing this successfully are chiq(dot)com and http://www.collectorsweekly(dot)com/stories
Only way I would even consider doing it though is if the site makes money as is with the eBay affilaites. If not then this venture is over for me.

If this is related mainly to eBay traffic, then provide a means for genuine and full seller and buyer feedback. ebay changed the feedback system for the worse some time back.
Allow photos to show damaged/incorrect goods etc.
You would have to have some way of authenticating users to ensure they are the genuine buyer or seller.

There is nobody advertising on the term. The real CPC is $0.00.
It is a bit like saying punk.com.au would be a good clothing site for a domainer to start, or goth.com.au. Not really, it is a culture. You could also say it is about music, haircuts etc. At the end of the day the term is vague and lacking in commercial focus. Clothing might be the closest thing, but that doesn't mean developing is a good idea.
There is no business model, that is the foundation of a site. Think about that before worrying about traffic, content etc. Traffic can be bought, a business model can't. That is what takes real thought.
When people search for "hipster" what are they looking to buy? If that isn't clear then you are have gone the wrong direction at the very first intersection.

punk(dot)com is a clothing shop
indie(dot)com.au is a clothing / design shop
I have done some SEO research on them and they seem to be doing ok. But know nothing about revenue.
I agree the business model is lacking. It is a test and maybe the idea is crap? I will know pretty soon. It was what was available at the time. I also have opshop.com.au ranking on the first page of google.
The numbers for opshop aren't as good, which is why I decided to try on the hipster url.
Maybe opshop is better? lol - prob not
