Closed at $751, clearly I've been overly bullish.

I'm guessing bidders have really factored this down as a dying term or a term with a short lifespan. Puts it in perspective about the value of these technology trend terms, even the best names really are not worth much.

Saxie looks to have been the closest with a guess of $500, DavidL the most inaccurate at $3000.

With domains like this you really need to make hay while the sun shines, ie start developing it and selling 3dtvs straight away, and typically that's not what most of us domainers do.

So I guess it was always inevitable that it might struggle to fetch a top price at an auction largely comprised of domainers whose strategy is more akin to a buy and hold strategy, which isn't ideal for a domain like 3dtv.com.au

If the domain was listed of a site like flippa where there are lots of developers who could start extracting value today and need not be as concerned about what its value will be in 5 years it would probably fair MUCH better.

I don't know, wouldn't a developer be put of by the same factors, ie limited lifespan. Are they really going to go head over heels for a term potentially on the way out?

I think most developers are generally shorter term focussed, they don't have the same belief that their websites today will be worth as much in 12, 24 or 36 months time without continued innovation and development, they see their assets as "depreciating" in value overtime naturally which gives them shorter term time horizons.

So the idea that no one will search for 3d tvs in 5 - 7 years time isn't as big a concern.

Whereas most domainers see their assets as "appreciating" in value overtime, ie when less than 5% of the domain in your portfolio are getting offers over the course of a year so if you don't think your domain is going to hold its value over the 5 - 10 year timeframe it makes sense to be hesistant to invest.

A developer on the other hand might look at 3dtv and say, that's a sweet domain with great metrics, I think I can create a site which will generate $10,000/profit a month in no time and I can either hold that site while the income halves year on year, or after I have developed it and have 6 months worth of revenues I can probably flip it off for 9 - 15 months profit and move onto my next project.

I don't really buy any of it. I think they are going to discount it just like a domainer, and probably be sceptical of the niche. Personally I think this would get far less at Flippa.
