I was watching Sky News today, and saw an ad for the Commonwealth Bank.

Nothing unusual about that, until I saw the reference to the actual domain name they were using in the ad.

can.com.au

Interesting use of marketing. Have a look for yourself.

Wonder what they paid for that 3L - and how it will work out for them?

P.S. Apologies to everyone who already knew this!

When I see this ad, I remember trying to sell 'debitcard.com.au' to the CBA, just before they were about to launch their new debit card product.

Despite being #1 for the search term 'debit card', 'compare debit cards', #2 for 'debit cards' and heaps of other stuff their response was (quoting)

Our strategy is to drive customers to our well know commbank.com.au url. As a well known brand, we do not see any incremental benefit is having this domain name to drive additional sales

This was before we'd even started discussing price of anything. They were just blinkered to using commbank.com.au (which is the worst domain name they could use IMO - cba.com.au would be much better).

They've obviously woken up a bit now...

Emphasis on 'a bit'. A very small 'bit' in my opinion.

can.com.au I still can't see relevance except for market branding. I suppose being a huge bank they can afford tonnes of money to market this.

Thing is the marketing team is very different to 6-12 months ago, we have dealt with CBA in the past too it might take talking to 3 - 4 different people before you even talk to the right person. That is the thing with big businesses they have various leaves of stake holders with various thoughts on things usually the gate keeper is not the best person to talk to.

Thing is some one probably built the site on commbank, built all the systems into it, every thing runs off it, changing to another URL would be difficult imo.

I've been a life long customer of Commbank since they indoctrinated us in primary school with the dollarmites scheme that ensured no matter how much they f*ck us, we'll go back and beg for more. It's like stockholm syndrome for banks.

The CAN campaign in combination with the beyond retarded redesign of netbank has left me feeling rather frustrated. It's so touchy-feely feel good that every time I visit a Commbank ATM, I feel the urge to reign down a barrage of punches, elbows and forearm strikes upon the screen in an attempt to vent my frustrations at my abuser. I find the entire thing condescending and it infuriates me.

Not enough to change banks though.
