Domain Name Hierarchy

What is the domain hierarchy in Australia?

.com.au
(hyphen) .com.au
.net.au
(hyphen) .net.au

or

.com.au
.net.au
(hyphen) .com.au
(hyphen) .net.au

Or are there alternatives to this model?

I would choose the .com.au then .net.au not a real big fan of hyphens although I do have 1 hyphenated .au domain

I would always choose the .net.au over a hyphen.com.au

You forgot Snoopy's hierarchy.

.com.au (Because the rest are rubbish, worthless and shouldn't exist) :)

But in the real world were us mortals don't own the whole .com.au domain registry there must be alternatives.

Exactly. I have a mixture of the first 3 (don't own any -.net.au) and find my preference for the middle two (.net.au and -.com.au) alternate quite often. I'd probably consider them fairly similar in value if it were a valuable keyword.

Lately however, I've tried to focus on only picking up .com.au's because if I can't find the time to develop them, they are most likely going to be easier to sell and recoup my money.

.net.au versus a hyphenated .com.au? It is a bit like asking what is better, a poke in the eyes or a kick in the balls?

All these alternatives are bad. Hyphenated .net.au's? We are really scraping the bottom of the barrel now.

When people can't get the .com.au they want, 99% look for another keyword. Look harder before choosing something that is obviously flawed, that is my advice.

So that's your long way of agreeing with what I said? :D

Snoopy if they are my only options I would take a poke in the eye over a kick in the balls any day. debt-collectors.net.au (or is that a kick in the balls).

Probably a good test of the market is health-insurance.net.au on the drop today.

i only stick with .com.au, theres so many i just move on, aus11 is right in saying if you can't get time to do anything with it then why go down the barrel

but if i had to i would go a hypen.com.au before a .net.au

I think so, most domainers own hundreds of domains and there is lot of usable .com.au's that can be bought for peanuts so why bother with 3rd rate stuff.

.com.au names with reasonable potential can be bought for $100. For the people registering .net.au etc for development plans (or resale also) that is madness in my view if it is something beyond MFA.

according to our snapper data the hierarchy is
.com.au (83% of count, 85% of revenue)
.net.au (12% of count, 10% of revenue)
(hyphen) .com.au (4% of count, 3% of revenue)
(hyphen) .net.au (0.5% of count, 0.2% of revenue)

If the exact match .com.au is taken and you seriously want to enter that niche, I would suggest registering a prefixkeyword.com.au or keywordsuffix.com.au instead of an exact match .net.au or a hyphenated .com.au - they're shit unless already developed.

Having said that - I picked up a hyphenated .net.au the other day for $300 off Flippa because it came with a Xenforo licence ($140 value on it's own) and a forum with 75k posts and almost 6k members (I think $160 for a 6k email list of people who like sports is a bargain). If you're gonna buy a hyphenated .net.au, at least let someone else developed it and then pick it up on the cheap - don't start from scratch with them.

I bought some hyphen .net.au domains that have the ideal keywords but after reading this thread I will revaluate and probably go with a keywordsuffix.com.au domains.
