hi there
as im new please excuse if my questions are silly
is there a good article on site as to how the bidding system works as sometimes netfleet wins the name but the price is alot less than what was offered on drop.com.au
does that mean you should sign up to both netfleet.com.au and drop.com.au and bid from both of these sites?
sorry am just confused as to how it all works

Hi Dean - there have been lots of posts about this. ;)

In simple terms, if you want to participate in the drop auctions:

  • Sign up with both Drop and Netfleet

  • If you want a domain, cover your position on both.

You'll learn bidding strategy as you go along.

Some people put in a bid early (of what they are prepared to go to), and sit back and watch and pray!

Others finesse with last minute bids!

Cheers, Ned

thanks ned thats a good idea , i just bid on my first domain !!
if nobody bids on the domain in the snapper auction how long after this do you have to wait before you can you then register this domain say with a domain registration company like melbourneit.com.au ?

If you win the auction at Netfleet the domain will be registered via Netregistry and if you win at Drop.com.au it will be registered with them. It's automagical and you won't get ripped like you would if you went to melbourneit.

You can see why most here think melb it is a rip off here http://www.dntrade.com.au/domain-registrars.php

If you were asking if nobody bids at either auction house, then at approximately 2pm - same time the auctions finish.

thanks joe for the helpful answers
i noticed just a few domains may have PD or pending delete
what does this mean?
is it ok to bid on these ?
is there a problem with them?

PD means Policy Delete.

This means for one reason or another, they were deleted for breech of auDA policy.

Could mean the registrants ABN expired, or could mean a whole host of other things.

PD drops I recommend investigating prior to bidding.

i notice utube.com.au is a PD and dropping again tomorrow, from memory it wasn't very long since it dropped before.

Did a check and it looks like the business was deregistered in 07 based on its VIC Business Number.

Why is car wash a PD??
From what I understand on this you need to have a legal entity as the "Registrant"

Maybe the "THE REIQUIN FAMILY TRUST" which is the trust attached to the Registrant ID "22 966 281 869" is not a legal entity.
According to this link http://abn.business.gov.au/EntityTypeDescription.aspx?Id=00030
"A trust is a fiduciary relationship where a trustee holds property or income for the benefit of others (the beneficiaries). A trust is not a separate legal entity."

So if two people are bidding on a domain on both drop and netfleet how is the winner of the domain determined?

I would logically think price but there are instances when drop has a lower price than netfleet...and drop wins.

Drop and Netfleet compete to be the first to register the domain at the registry once it is purged.

The domains are purged by the Registry at about 2PM daily, at which time all the registrars have an opportunity to try to be the first to register the domain.

Who ever is the highest bidder on the platform that is fastest in catching it.

Drop & Netfleet compete in a race to catch it.

edit. you beat me to it.

Isnt there someway that I could try register it myself at 2pm? Or do drop and netfleet have some agreement with auda that allows only them to reigester it at that time?

You can try. But they have a direct connection to the registry that the common user does not. They don't have an agreement, but they are just fast.

So your chances of beating them are really nil.
