Direct Search or Link for SEO ?

Hi everyone, which is better for Ranking..

1000people searching using the browsers address bar

OR

1000people clicking a link

Let's say for this example you only had one keyword you wanted to optimize for & the link contained that one keyword you want to rank for.

Um given the choice I guess I'd opt for the 1 anchor text rich link...

But it's just 1 link - not exactly earth shattering.

Yeah I'm wondering all of the companies advertising on TV do they get a ranking benefit by having people look them up via the browser or should they be investing in SEO & links for PR.
