Can't you do fixed bids anymore?

Not on auctions. http://www.netfleet.com.au/support-centre/40/Bids-and-Offers-on-Netfleet.html

Auctions

All bids on our Auctions are Proxy/Automatic Bids. This means the price you enter will be your hidden maximum, and the system will automatically bid you up on your behalf, only ever $1 over the next highest bid. For example, if the current price is $40 (and that is the bidders maximum) and you enter a proxy/automatic bid of $100, the current price would be $41.

Should be able to on domains with reserves. Then buyers can creep up to the reserve and the seller gets a sale.

That's not a bad point you raise there Paul. If there is only one keen bidder on a domain, they may well have a high proxy which is near the reserve - but it will never see the light of day unless there is another bidder.

I'd be interested in Anthony's thoughts on this. (Though I have a nagging feeling he may have addressed this previously?).

Anyway, getting back to ToyBarn - I'm sure Anthony will be having a "quiet look" at the bids. Whilst on the face it seems strange, they may well be kosher. And if they're not, knowing him, he will take no prisoners. ;)

You can, as long as the reserve has not been met, your bid gets entered at full value. I just tried it on ba.com.au which was on $10, I entered $100 and it went directly up to $100. It has been that way for a while AFAIK.

Maybe someone else has a higher proxy?

I did think it was set up like that, but that's not what's been said here.

Just tried it on one (with a high BIN price - so safely assumed it had a reserve) that didn't have any bids and it was the same - jumped straight to my full bid.

If it was not like that a single bidder would never be able to push up to the reserve price by incrementing their bid and would always have to wait for another bidder to bid up to at least the reserve. Which would in my opinion would be silly as the seller would not get a sale if there was only one bidder even if that bidder was prepared to pay the reserve.

Getting back to the Toybarn bids - Could be legit but I must say I have been suss of bids on a few domains lately. Could all maybe be resolved if the bidders ids were displayed like on expireddomains.co.nz.

I agree, and that's how I thought it was until Ned mentioned otherwise. It just makes sense to be able to make a sale.

The original question was whether one could make a fixed bid on an auction rather than a proxy. (Bit like what Drop still has).

I said no, and quoted the NF reference.

Then we went off on a tangent, with both Paul and Lucas raising good points. As I stated, I had suspected Anthony had previously posted something about AMA domains with reserves. I'm sure he'll clarify. :)

Anyway, perhaps this part of the discussion should be on the Netfleet thread!

Hi all, sorry to be in so late on this juicy thread.

If there is a reserve on a domain then your proxy bid automatically becomes the current bid.
In other words it looks and feels like a fixed bid until the reserve is met.
Right now fixed bidding on no-reserve or reserve met domains is not possible.

I'll look into the bidding history, thanks for alerting me.

Puts it up again - and with 8 days to go, it is already at $300. (Reserve not met). To get to that figure, it means there must be at least two bidders on it.

I've just chatted to Anthony, and I was wrong on this, so I'm happy to correct myself. Thanks to Lucas for pointing this out.

This is the situation:

Domains on the AMA with no reserve price: Proxy bid applies and only goes up by $1 at a time. i.e.

Auctions

All bids on our Auctions are Proxy/Automatic Bids. This means the price you enter will be your hidden maximum, and the system will automatically bid you up on your behalf, only ever $1 over the next highest bid. Domains on the AMA with reserve price: If you put a proxy bid in less than the reserve, then it takes your full bid. When it hits reserve, then the $1 incremental bidding comes into play.

So in the case of ToyBarn, there may well be only one bidder who put in a proxy of $300.

Let's see if it gets past reserve.

Looked at the bid and it looks legitimate.

Don't want to go into all the obvious things I check but over and above the obvious stuff they are an active buyer and the domain matches other domains they have purchased.
