Probably a good move.
Put your awesome .com.au portfolio up for sale and you can retire 10 x times over! :)

A few likes here but no real interest
"net.au" is definitely on the nose at the moment which is strange given that I still get a decent trickle of high xxx & low x,xxx sales

Greg, I take my hat off to you if you're getting some good .net.au sales! :) I've not had much interest in the few that I've got (some of which are certainly premium terms).

Two character domains are certainly a rarity though, so I'm surprised you've not had more interest in these.

I actually like one of the domains that you've picked up but I know you only paid about $10 for it on the drops so maybe it just comes down to price. Many here already know what people have paid on the drops so they are a hard market although .net.au domains are certainly in the firing line with regards to direct registrations it would seem.

Decent prices need end-users and the problem in Australia is the lack of a publicly recognisable "go to" Aftermarket
If we ever get a serious player in that market then we need to support it with good domains at good (for buyer & seller) prices
The buyers are out there; eg.
  • "mx.net.au" sold for $2500, plus GST, after not less than 6 circa $50 offers
  • I have 10+ "ll.net.au" with 5+ offers

Greg has some great .net.au names and they can be a winner if developed or even monetised properly. .Everyone would agree net.au is not as good as .com.au just like .net is not as good as .com but they do still have value depending on how the name is actually used.

Some .net.au names have done very well making daily income for their owners. I know a premium generic one word www.photocopiers.net.au which makes the owner a nice five / six figure income annually with a largely automated sales lead website! That's a great .net.au example what can be done successfully and with great profit. It certainly taught me something.

Going a little deeper for the newbies who may not know some backgound;

auDA, Ausregistry and Melbourne IT ( and some of their associated entities) have hurt the value of .net.au by putting out a lot of false and misleading material promoting their proposed competing .au extension. What they should have been doing is more actively promoting .com.au and .net.au not actively working against them and the interests of their owners!
Conflict of interest for auDA and a board member related company? https://www.tppwholesale.com.au/blog/vote-yes-opening-au-direct-registrations/

As everyone knows there are millions of names still available for .com.au and .net.au registrations and a large aftermarket is evident.

The claims by Ariregistry/ Ausregistry new TLD's are better for SEO are also false as Google's Matt Cutts stated shooting down certain peoples credibility. http://www.domainer.com.au/a-timely-warning-for-au/
FALSE https://www.marketingmag.com.au/hubs-c/new-top-level-domains-to-trump-com-in-google-search-results/

Google call BullSh% on false claims https://plus.google.com/+MattCutts/posts/4VaWg4TMM5F

Will .net.au become like the .id.au they tried to push and even give away the first 50,000 for a 6 months? It will be auDA and Supply registry / registrars/ resellers fault if this happens. It will backfire on auDA and the registry and resellers. Less renewals of .net.au means a loss of income for them which they think they may pick up with the .au or do they think people will register all three .com.au, .net.au and .au? Crazy. It might look good on their registry / registrar / reseller projected sales figures for potential investors or shareholders but it is bullshit and anyone who does a proper due diligence would find this out!

Some claims have been pure bullsh# from a monopoly registry and 2 auDA Board member's who should know better. It hurts .com.au and .net.au. With 3000 global extensions now available Neustar Inc ( owners of Ausregistry) and Melbourne IT only want the extra profits another new extension will bring. They seemingly could care less about actual registrants and owners.
B.S. https://www.ausregistry.com.au/product-innovation-will-produce-the-next-3-million-au-domains/

The .ID.AU is a previous flop example when some people said "demand" and lack of names left as .com.au and .net required another .au extension option, Those people are still running auDA and the board it seems...

AusRegistry id.au "free trial" promotion

Posted by Jo Lim on 15 September 2003

AusRegistry has launched a special promotion for id.au, the domain space for Australian individuals, commencing 15 September 2003.

Up to 50,000 id.au domain names are being offered on a "free trial" period for 6 months. Once the trial period is over, the registrant must pay for their domain name licence if they wish to keep it.

Please Note: For the purposes of the promotion, auDA has authorised an exception to the Transfers Policy (2003-03). People who register an id.au domain name as part of the promotion will not be permitted to transfer their domain name to another registrar until the end of the 6 month free trial period.

For more information about the promotion, please see MyWebname.com.au.

"net.au" is definitely the poor cousin of "com.au", but does have fractional value
"id.au" does not even rate mention (and to be fair, is not intended for commercial use)
Keen observers of domain use will see that "net.au" is used extensively by 2nd tier local businesses (and not just in the tech space)
PS....I have only ever used my "id.au" for my "poor student" emails

It seems strange the misinformation promoting the need for a proposed competing.au extension also included it would be of benefit to .id users... Do they have rights to the proposed .au extension or do the rights to go to existing .com.au or existing.net.au owners of the equivalent name? There are many .id.au names registered which are generic words and not actual people's names.. Not what it was intended for but another loophole being used and seemingly not properly administered by auDA for policy delete.

This again contains false and misleading information. It does not state the official registration, renewal and drop off non renewal facts about the failed direct.uk and .nz extension results so far.
Note the author is auDA Board member Derek Whitehead who also is on the auDA Foundation Board...

"There has been an increase in the number of people registering different types of domain names for individual use, but there has been a decrease in the number of id.au domain names being registered. The proposed changes will hopefully encourage individuals to readily obtain a desirable Australian domain name."

This may be a little self-serving, but I have been negotiating the sale of these to a few end-users and was asked by one buyer to justify my price
My response was:
"The average price of reported <ll>.net name sales in 2016 was over $40000 USD
Therefore on the basis that "net.au" domains trade at around 7.5-10% of the "net" domains the value of <ll>.net.au should be in the range of $4-6,000 AUD"
His response was:
"I will get back to you shortly"
That was 2 days ago, so I am not sure that he is totally convinced (Yet)
