Is there anyone else who can start up another drop /. backorder / name catcher service? I think you will get a lot of support here and in the market

The upcoming chances to Netfleet's auction are disappointing

Just a thought outside the box ..Would people support an Auda run drop / auction service? How could it run fairly for everyone while generating some money to them so they can take off the need to charge people for COR / New regisrations when names are traded and sold etc. Most other countries when you buy a name from sonme yoiu get their license which carries on until the name expry/ renewal date... No added costs for COR such as we are burdered with in Australia by the "current" system

Of course most registrars & auda currently love the cor fees and extra money they reap in but its not fair for consumers with just more red tape and costs the .com extensions does not have.

People should be allowed to register a name from 1 - 10years ( as they can in many extensions such as .com. They also should be allowed to sell a name and pass on the remaining time left on the name without more costs to the new buyer.

Have a look at the crazy COR prices some registrars charge their customers. Of course when you bid at these drop uctions the new reg fee / cor is on it also!

i'm under the opinion it isn't just that easy, nor cheap.

i'm also under the opinion you have to be certified ( I may be wrong)

i'm also under the opinion that suitable parties are indeed looking into it right now and have been for a while.

but for little ol us to go do it.......... I don't think we have a hope in hell without a big wallet.

We've looked into it previously but timing has always been a limiting factor. The issue wasn't registry connections or having the hardware to do it, its more a development issue where we could have the time better used.

To build such a system and have time for testing to ensure there is good number of domains caught, and to see it released to the public and not become a service where little to no domains are caught and people leave the service were our main concern.

so you do have the capabilities? its just not cost effective for you? ( at this moment in time )

Of course, we've prioritised other services over a drop/auction service.

Since we've got hardware in Melbourne it maximises our chances (this was before they had mel<->syd), since Ausregistry is also in Melbourne. Our testing showed great results but that was the end of it.

Ventraip, happy to be a beta tester / real time bidder/ buyer if you want to give it a try

Your service is good and prices great. Go for it many would probably support you.. how about a FREE aftermarket sales platform also while you are at it like Netfleet started with? It would bring in a lot more users to you also

Whoever catches names will get customers and whoever doesn't won't. That is part of the problem with Netfleet really, they've been at the low end of the ethics scale for as long as I can remember and can get away with it more than most businesses could.

I think it is a good idea, would need a fair bit of petitioning I think.

We did the numbers many years ago (prior to Netfleet and Drop) and it didn't stack up in .au - while there are good days ($x,xxx names) those often offset / pay for the bad days.

While I can foresee other players in the market, it's a very small pie compared to the rest of the world. With an extreme sovereign risk in .au, any investment in this space would need to be very carefully thought through.

It is only going to make sense for existing registrars.

As Simon said the market in Australia isn't huge and I don't believe Drop catchers are making the big dollars everyone thinks, if you do some maths on this, staff costs, hardware and colocation costs add up, you need to get quite a few $20K sales. I actually think Registrars like Ventra are playing the smart game with web hosting focus, which is high profit (and they offer a great hosting service!).

Also there are already about 4 Registrars offering some type of backorder or auction platform, obviously Netfleet and Drop are the most successful at this stage.

On the point of auDA running a platform, this is not something that auDA can do (for a number of reasons, most notably its constitution). auDA's registrar function is only an 'emergency' platform, to cater for situations like Bottle Domains where a Registrar loses accreditation or similar situations.
