I am wondering if anyone here enough confidence in their web skills that they happily buy and also develop their .net.au names (with success) , i do still find some great names up for grabs in the .net.au space that i am quite tempted to acquire

Is the gap closing ?

I recently bought a .net.au which ranks very well in google. Though to develop, im not too confident on them. My skills aren't as good as others who have proven to rank very well for .net.au's

I stay away from Net for 2 main reasons

1) Australian's don't view .Net.au on the same level as .Com.au. In the USA, the difference is more acceptable (even .org can compete with .coms in some areas).
2) Ranking on Google AU is harder for a .Net.AU then a .Com.AU. It always takes a more sustained effort (in my experience) to rank a .net.au then it does a .net

I have a few select ones that I buy in a particular niche, but I do agree they take longer to rank and with more effort. There are plenty of examples of .net.au ranking well for some fairly competitive terms which have been previously discussed here on DNT.

I'm actually working on the branding for a single word generic .net.au right now.

You've got some nice .net.au's imho.

GeoDomains also has - one good one that I can think of that ranks well is Tours.net.au. It's a nice looking site on Pg1
of Google for the term "Tours".

I'm not sure that's a good example... abc.net.au has backlinks from many .edu.au, .gov.au, .gov websites and backlinks from so many other sites that most smaller people developing .net.au wouldn't be able to get.

Same with Whirlpool.net.au. But these are oddities rather then the norm. They've taken years to build up cred or had branding beforehand.

.Net is just not great for most commercial sites.

I think .net.au is not bad for specific keywords as hack. Example:

spider.net.au
fishing.net.au
inter.net.au
smart.net.au

It will be also good if the .com.au is already taken by big company in different industry. Example:

platinum.net.au can be used for platinum credit cards or platinum jewellery since the .com.au is taken by big investment fund.

Tours.net.au was ranking No 1 for the term "Tours" - but currently No 4 I think.

Both great websites.

If you can't get the .com.au; then the .net.au is definitely the next best.

IMHO.

I have no idea about ranking a .net.au. What I'm saying is that no major business uses it (I think the reasons why are obvious). The examples of well known sites using them above (whirlpool and the abc) are examples of two organisations that are non profits, a substantial profit making business would not make blunders like that.

For those who say "well I'm only concerned about search engine traffic and nothing else", it is probably workable, but for everyone else it is a house built on cracked foundations.
