Great article,

Like this piece of advice

"If you start with something small and do it really well, it can become something big, rather than start with the idea that it has to be something big," he says.

Nice find.

I like this one:

2. The best time to plant a tree was 10 years ago. The second-best time is today. "All those things that people often perceive as being too late or a missed opportunity – the second-best time is right now."

thanks for the post.

i've used them twice, once to sell and once to buy

they have a VERY well thoughtout interface.

hopefully australians have started to not take on the "bring tall poppies down" syndrome and are now ready to embrace a new era of "good on ya"

good on them

They have done well, as they have a good business model which they execute well. Greg Roebuck understands the internet and domain names, and uses it to his advantage, unlike other CEOs. Many of you will see Roebuck buying domains on the drops.

The problem in the sector is that there is no strong competition (apologies to my mate at Trading Post!), having used the site in the past, listing a car has gone from about $50 to over $100!! This really leaves the door open for a competitor......

I am surprised that REA who also has a great business model with realestate.com.au has not jumped into this market.

McDonalds / Hungry jacks / KFC theory, exactly right, don't take the P**$ and stay on top.

maybe the 2 have a non verbal agreement " stay off my turf and i will stay off yours" ? that would make sense to me.

This really leaves the door open for a competitor......

the door to entry is sooooooooo high, thats the problem.

Actually I think I read somewhere recently that one of carsales aquired companies has taken over the operations of the trading post under a licenced arrangement.....so they have that one covered too.

As far as domains...there are a few key domains they havent covered yet so the opportunity could be there for someone with the startup to give them a run for their money or at least the cheque book.
