but I have been doing some reading and the .com domains are really expensive, I usually buy for clients, some of who are small businesses so they wont spend big $$In my view you are best off looking at .com drops and .com aftermarket. Forget about .com.au, it is going to be a bad market for years with .au uncertainty.
Overall though the best deals are to be had be contacting the registrants, this takes a lot of time and research though.
thanks for the advice, its great reading the different posts on buying and trading domains, I've definitely learnt a lot.@Cherie Quin - start by learning, as said above, watch the aftermarket and drops, and then just make offers on domains you're interested in. The worst thing is you get knocked back.
The top reported AU sales will help you get a rough idea of prices:

myself also. i've found you just have to present what is available as a "hand reg" and whats available through owners and let them decide.I usually buy for clients

Plenty of sellable names on drop auctions for $100-$300
.com is garbage tho
it's why all ccTLDs drop it
and probably why they're dropping in the first place
I recommend gTLDs
There is .sydney and .melbourne for cities if they want city cachet
Blah blah blah. I don't think too many cctlds have dropped ".com" lately.
Doesn't make any sense either that valuable domains would drop because they are "garbage". If that was true they wouldn't sell.
Can't agree with you on this Rhythm. But each to their own.I recommend gTLDs

Getting back to your original question Cherie ...here's another Aussie marketplace you could check out (link below is for the 'one word' domain category):where is the best place to buy really good domains, Netfleet ?
Flagrant self-promotion Luke. Surely there must be a DNT rule against that?Getting back to your original question Cherie ...here's another Aussie marketplace you could check out (link below is for the 'one word' domain category):

.melbourne and .sydney reminds me of the Green Day song:
"The Boulevard of Broken Dreams"
"I walk a lonely road
The only one that I have ever known
Don't know where it goes
But it's only me, and I walk alone
I walk this empty street
On the boulevard of broken dreams
Where the city sleeps
And I'm the only one, and I walk alone"
You might be right Rhythm. But let's wait until a couple of renewal cycles. That's a lot of lonely .sydney domains
Absolutely! And I'm glad there isn't a DNT rule against self-promotionFlagrant self-promotion Luke. Surely there must be a DNT rule against that?
LOL!
