Auto Renewal Feature

I am in the process of renewing a few domain names and while going through the checkout process I noticed that my domain registrar is now offering an auto renewal feature. This is the first time I've seen a domain registrar offer such a feature.

Two year from now, will the expiry auctions be even more desolate than they have been in the last couple of weeks?

I guess some names will still slip through the cracks, but surely auto-renew would have some effect on the numbers.

I'm with AUST domains though I know Drop has the feature as well (which is quite ironic given how they make their money... ).

but then people have credit cards that expire and then all the domains drop too, it can happen.

This is a fantastic feature. But hey, if this existed 1 year ago we wouldn't have the InvestmentProperty.com.au debacle

Just FYI.. auto renewals for .au domains is against auDA policy..

Couple of years ago as a reseller auDA found out we were attempting to offer auto renewals on .au domains otherwise don't bother trying to sell .au domains. So to they on their good side the auto renew option was removed.

So don't rely on a registrar offering auto renew on .au domains..

They operate in a very strange way. I wonder what exactly the big deal is about offering auto renewal?

I guess they'll have to appoint a panel, write some policy papers on it and discuss whether or not the times have changed to the point where the community would accept this controversial feature.

There you go, I had no idea. But I agree, very archaic. I think it's great that AuDA is trying to protect the namespace from squatters, domainers, etc. but really that might be an annoying step too far.

The registar is suppose to check upon each renewal that the registrant is still eligible to hold the domain, eg. if a company is now deregistered the domain should be deleted by the registrar.. and yes I know this will never happen.. but as policy says.. registrar must do..
