Nominet proposes shorter .uk domains

In my view nothing much is going to happen for .co.uk/.uk when 5 years runs out. I think auDA/supply people are trying to blame the failure of .uk on the 5 years being too long but the real problem is lack of demand. auDA should have the balls to consider the reason why .uk is failing is because it was a really bad idea, not because of anything Nominet did or should have done in terms of implementation.

People see it has done badly then try to justify why that is by looking for trivial reasons, look to the obvious reason!

The obvious reason was that a few domainers manipulated - if not completely hijacked - the .uk launch process not unlike what seems to be happening in .au now

And now they are all paying the price

Or perhaps rather not getting paid the price of what their domain was worth had they not bullied nominet into implementing the most ridiculous .cctld launch process I've seen

.nz at least is on the podium

.au PRP were more intelligent with the lottery if unresolved contested domains and ASAP timeframe

The fact that nobody likes it (I had my reservations too) is like when a Judge/King/Ombudsman etc has to make a decision to the satisfaction of all parties... If nobody is happy it means it's the right decision.

If nobody is happy it means it's the right decision
lets dissect that, and as a neutral statement not related to the present subject matter.

so CHANGE was instigated by 1 party which caused the other party to disagree, the "judge" then makes a decision which both parties do not like, so THUS change occurred in some form, correct?

how is that the right decision?

whats happened is SOMEONE decided to create change and it occurred in some form, i do it to the kids all the time, i say no no no when i know i'm going to say yes but they will accept less, its a sales mans tactic, i end up with what i want and my kid ends THINKING they got what they wanted ! which is a compromise which is actually what i was intending all the while.

Benefits of change vs danger of status quo
SPARK: now you get a long story, sorry, go grab a beer.
i am ALL for change, i'll tell you how much i am for change, on wednedsay i went to victoria markets melbourne for their food night, i took helena and the kids and said " my shout, have what you want" , my daughter had a pretzel bread stuffed with salted caramel as a MAIN course followed by a new york waffle rocky road style with ice cream ! i think very few parents would allow that but because we eat EXTREMELY healthly i figure a blow is acceptable, my point being my state of mind to change.
also that night helena wa with ruby and i was with max because it was very crowded so we agreed to meet a certain place after we went exploring, max wanted to go BACK to the row ( its like supermarket aisles) that he had been as it was familiar and i'd say he felt safer ( he's 9yrs) but i said " max lets walk this way we haven't been before as if you always walk the same way, you always see the same thing" so we did and he loved the new visuals and stores he saw.

so what i am saying is i am NOT a person of status quo, i am NOT afraid of change, but i am a habit person, i am a systems person but i will change on a dime IF a new way is presented to me which i believe to be better as i am a web developer.

i started with ASP, moved to html, then php, then wordpress, then templates with studiopress ( thats when i started on dnt) i have now gone through a few more and i am on divi theme with a strong hold on outsourcing to india.

WHY, because its always been a progression that was researched and proven to be better, so simply prove the benefits and i may be open to change.

i just find it quite comical that many people on dnt etc can come up with detailed reasons against and nobody can come up with detailed reasons for?

we have the prp , i hope you submitted and i hope you allowed it to be public.

In New Zealand they tried the 6 month limitation to push it through and pump up registrations but look what happened later! A large amount of domain name owners did not renew the direct .nz.... They let it drop and went back to just using their .co.nz etc!

This is fact that no matter how it is pushed some people wake up to the scam and cash grab and walk away.

Did it benefit the overall New Zealand Economy? Did more people rush to start businesses, employ people, change over from their .co.nz name to the .nz? No.

It is NOT innovation to copy others. So how can it be innovation to copy what they did in the .uk and .nz and fail also? The damage to the very strong existing .au namespace cannot be allowed. In fact under the Governments letter of endorsement to auDA for them to remain in management of the .au name space they are not allowed to in any way damage the reputation of the .au namespace... If existing .au registrants rights or domain names are devalued due to the actions of auDA then auDA themselves have a serious risk from government and also the .au owners who have been detrimentally affected ( including loss of asset value doe to auDA Process or decisions) . This is where our .au namespace system and ther approved management of it is very different to the .nz and .uk also where they had no such requirements from their governments.

The direct .nz and direct .uk both failed.. 5 years or 6 months to give people the time to claim and register it makes no difference.

There will be a massive drop off of renewals after the time comes for people to pay for their .uk names they got FREE. This occurred in Singapore where their promotion was register a .co.sg and get a FREE .sg and via versa. At renewal time people dropped names and did not choose to pay for the extra costs.
