i don't mention all the work i do and this one i haven't mention as it happened SO quickly and i can't detail this one but i will tell you what happened. sorry , no links in this post !
a new client came to me from a referral and i put together a plan for their ecom business, once again they didn't take my advice on buying a GREAT name but went with a hand reg.

anyway, i convinced them to use my seo guys and they started facebook before the website was completed which p******d me off as then they were on my back to complete even though i had confirmed a completion date with them.

WELL we were getting orders online ( i had all the ssl and credit card setup early) WITHOUT proper product descriptions and very few images as this had not been supplied to me !!! people were purchasing just from the product name, OK, popular products, KNOWN products at very good prices.

all via facebook ads.

so anyway, i finished the site to what i would call "useable" last weekend and sales DROPPED ! OMG my phone went off, " WTF did you do? "
i reviewed the difference between last week and this week and the only thing i could find was the client asked me to ADD extra questions into the cart form.
i did feel it was to much info and i did tell him at the time, so i told him again and we removed them.
BANG, 10K in sales first day ......today ( yes i lied at the top because you would not have believed me) but TRUE, a hand reg domain, facebook adds, good products, reasonable images, smooth ecom and $10K today.
thats all i can relate it to ?
thats why i love developing, OK, 10K might be tiny but in relation to the client this is HUGEEEEEE, hes done in 1 day what he did in a week.
the good news is now they have money to keep up the seo and i can see them on tv not to soon .
great news is they have expansion plans so i'm already in discussions about that.

HINT: if you were like me and you were programming at 3am, just send them an email about ANYTHING, just ask them a question JUST so they see the timestamp

Can I ask:

What were the differences in client domain vs your suggestion?

What did you add/delete in the checkout that affected the conversions?

he added, and then we deleted questions just for statiscally nature.
he asked for their work statis, eg self employed, fulltime, parttime etcc.

i said " get the sale then send a follow up email asking this stuff, they will either reply or not ! but GET the sale first."

the sales funnell has to be quick and easy imo.

Absolutely - minimise the friction to completion. Any hurdles you put in the way is just another excuse for an abandoned shopping cart.
Follow up after the sale to continue engagement and continue selling and enhance your profile data.

update: still playing with the forms, changing things.
WHY won't clients just leave whats working alone???
anyway, its up and down averaging between 6-10K a day

i don't think i'll do any updates now, gotta move on, its just it was an interesting situation and thats why i posted.
hope it helped someone, i find its always good to tell new clients stories about others successes.
