It would be great to see a public statement from auDA to clarify the direction that's being taken.

I have to confess that I misread / misinterpreted auDA's statement yesterday. My apologies. There were two things that made me do so:

• In the past, auDA has vehemently steered away from wanting to do the registry side of things; and

• When they mentioned "AusRegistry will be invited to participate in the restricted tender process ..."

Interesting times ahead.

I don't think apologies are necessary. I think many of us missed the key details in the nuanced wording.

Some clearer statements would have been helpful, such as:
'the registry system for the .au name space will no longer be operated by a third party. The registry will be operated directly by auDA, following the conclusion of the existing registry contract. We will be undertaking a restricted tender process to select a suitable provider with the expertise to build the new registry system.'

Interesting times ahead.

yeah, "part" not "full" - ccTLD's are not statutory creatures. But, Gov has an active role at a distance, as it should be.

Just a few thoughts,

• What will AUDA do with all the money? (revenue should go up by $25-30million per year) Let's hope they do some big price reductions.
• I can imagine a lot of Ausregistry employees ending up at AUDA
• Will Ausregistry do some kind of deal to sell infrastructure to AUDA?
• Will Ausregistry even keep an office in Australia? If so I'd say it is going to be small.
• How will Neustar and Golden Gate react? Neustar in particular will be waking up today to the thought that they've been sold a lemon. Will Golden Gate be looking for a price reduction (note though Ausregistry would be a pretty small part of Neustar)
• Good lesson here on businesses reliant on one major customer (remember what used to happen to Myer suppliers?)
• Where does this leave direct registrations? I'm betting even AUDA doesn't know the answer to that. Further govt intervention could blow it over in an instant.

100% we do not want to see auDA just become Ausregistry / Melbourne IT etc. Things will go backwards. Their mindset is just profit profit profit.

Any jobs, tenders etc should all be advertised on the auDA website but with new technology few extra people are even needed bu auDA to also run the wholesale registry.

Let's keep an eye on this or we may see some massive wastage on expenses... and let's see who that money goes to.

Agree, hopefully though we will see significant changes in the AUDA board in the wake of this. This should be a big wakeup call for Auda, that the decisions they have been making are not in the public interest.

I think if AuGov had a model like .sg people would be frothing from the mouth. Good bye drop and netfleet and Domainshield and the freedom to trade freely, goodbye to your domain portfolio mate.

Registrants do not have the right to sell or transfer .sg domains to any party for profit. "YAY, lets do it"

Ironically the Government of Singapore would have had minority control of our registry had the plug not been pulled. Actually they probably will have control for some period of time between when Golden Gate takes over Neustar and AUDA takes the registry back.

From memory Mr Goldstein at the auDA 2016 Annual General Meeting was pushing that people such as him with an .ID.AU should also have equal rights to the proposed competing additional .au extension. Now that would be even more chaos...

The admin and registry role model not policy.... FYI I have numerous Singapore names and have for many years. Just like the old rules in Australia there are ways to do things in Singapore. The point was it is Government run wholesale registry not an overseas private company with Board decision power we have been burdened with in Australia.

Mr Goldstein also has chosen to use .COM and not .com.au for his blog...How people like this can comment seriously on .au and the .com.au space when they can't see the importance of supporting the .com.au themselves is hard to believe... especially when they seem to have had roles and support from auDA for so many years...the auDA financial support coming from profits made off other peoples .com.au .net.au registrant fees of course?

.id.au domain names have been available to register for something like 27 years. People registered them and should be allowed the equivalent direct .au in the name of "choice".

You are joking right? .id.au owners get equal rights to .au? That is laughable. There are many id.au names registered which should be policy deleted as they do not meet policy.

.id.au started around 2001/2002. It was widely mocked and seen as a an example of how out of touch AUDA was back then, and the extension is seen as no different today. No rights for .id.au holders!
