Where is easiest to check com au availabilty to reg?

My favourite registrars now have a convoluted check on domain availability.
There must be somewhere easier to see if the com au is taken?

Sometimes I wonder if the domain availability checkers on some registrars are used deviously and particularly in the .com space. A number of times I've searched for a name and then procrastinated for a short time only to come back and find that it has been registered in between time and is now up for sale. I have to wonder if this is just a coincidence?

Yes.Horshack. You are correct.
Some registrars tempt you with an available status, only to do a live check later and reveal status ias Taken.
Why?
Could be one of several reasons.

I often just use AusRegistry whois lookup for .au, but I always use a simple nslookup from command line for .com

I assumed that since our good friend HireDomains quoted me in that post, he meant Scott7.com.au is available. Thus my response that it is worth $0. As an aside, am I allowed to say that or is $0 an official Snoopy trademark?

Registrars have been caught doing this in the past, network solutions registered names directly that customers were searching on and some others have been know to sell the search data to other parties.

You are best off using something like domainnameanalyzer which queries verisign, not that verisign is in any way trustworthy but it cuts out the registrar part at least. The way to cut out verisign aswell would be to be search against the zone file records, that would be time consuming to set up.

Need to apply to Verisign to get it, the file size is very large.
