Finally acquired the .com for our business!

So we have been trading on the name Prosperity Media for the last 3 years.
We have been getting a few leads from the US market to do work so we thought it would be wise to get the .com brand name before we take on any new business in the US Market, Guess it would look more professional from a business point of view to use the .com for branding.

The seller originally wanted over $28,000 US though we were able to get the price down to $2,400 US after some negotiations over a 5 month period.

Nice one it's great to have the global brand protection if the .com is available/affordable.

It's a great feeling when you're able to get the .com, particularly if it's at a good price! The snippet below is an example of my own experience from an article I published a while ago (domainer.com.au):

I bought the .com version of my main business name (The Lucky Country) early this year. This means that I don’t have to worry about people ending up at the wrong place, as the .com version forwards to my website hosted on the .com.au domain. I’ve also got email forwarding setup, so if someone leaves the ‘.au’ bit off the end of the email address – the email will still get to my inbox. Having both the .com and .com.au domains also means that I can just say the name of my business, I don’t need to say “dot com dot au” at the end.​

congrats, i'm trying to buy a .com for a client and can't even get an reply from current owner. and the domain has never been used.

many .com owners just throw a price out and quite often it sticks, so you can't blame them.
Great to secure the .com though, well done. I was lucky enough to get ours by hand reg back in 2006 (back then you could still hand reg some reasonable domains).

I grabbed mine in 2007 and since then there have been a handful of companies start up around the world with the same name. However, on top of the .com & .com.au I also own the .net, org, co.uk and info so at have at least partially blocked them out. It's good value for my piece of mind.

Nah we will probably run hreflang and make two versions of the site on a similar theme. Whilst adding more US examples to the .com and AU examples to the .com.au - also considering a possible 301 of another search blog I run to the .com

Might write a post about the whole process.
1. Find out who owns the domain, find out what else they own, in my case the domain owner was a "serious" domainer with around 10,000 names from my research. For any domain acquisition you need to do your research =)
2. Email him to see if he is selling, if it is a domainer they probably want to sell, if it is a business owner they probably do not want to sell unless you offer good $$$.
3. See what he wants originally this guy wanted $28,000
4. Have your arguments ready, in this case I told the guy the domain is simply not worth what he is asking I made an offer of $2,000 USD to buy it today, 2k was a fair price in my eyes as this name probably has like 20-30 end users in the world who want it.
5. He countered with something like $8,000 USD (instantly wiped $20,000 of the price)
6. I think I upped the price to like $2,400 USD then he comes back saying $6,000 USD and he will sell today claims other are trying to buy it in the past and will offer it to other people (I would probably say the same thing and have used that line in the past)
7. I didn't reply for like 20 days (shows probably not desprate for the domain)
8. Sent him an email after seeing presentation at Syd Start saying all serious business owners need .com (got me pumped up) seeing if domain is still for sale.
9. He replies yeah sell it for $5,000
I do not reply for 15 days he sends me an email saying "Still want this" I say yeah will buy today on pay pal for $2,400 he says "ok"

My guess he needed some quick cash for Renewals so maybe that is why the price was good.

Unfortunately a .com.au will still always leak traffic to a .com domain, (such a shame that the .au is 'umbrella'd by the .com)
Well done on your purchase, also by getting that price down so much!
Would the same scenario come to be if you weren't a domainer? Maybe not..
