Fuji Xerox Australia Pty Ltd let paper dot com dot au expire and go through to the drops not sure if anyone mentioned that.

This follows their apparent loss of photocopier dot com dot au some time ago.

You can see their ownership of photocopier mentioned in this auda issues paper:

http://www.auda.org.au/pdf/smwg-issues-paper.pdf

"Generic domain names have also been bought by large corporations for undisclosed amounts. To name a few, BankWest bought happybanking.com.au, St George Bank Ltd bought bestbank.com.au, National Australia Bank Ltd bought smartbanking.com.au, ING Bank (Australia) Ltd bought mortgage.com.au Fuji Xerox Australia Pty Ltd bought photocopier.com.au and 3M Australia Pty Ltd bought scotch.com.au It is unclear when these transactions have taken place."

And in the footnote:

"The speculated price paid for photocopier.com.au was AU$137,000."

But they don't own it now.

Maybe 10 year registrations would help organisations like this hold onto their domain names.

i've thought about that, problem is large organisations just FORGET, there are heaps of threads on this here in DNT, best to do this:

put it as a RECURRING invoice in an accounting system like quickbooks or myob
keep all your domains in 1 place/registra and point them all to an email address where you own the domain and not a gmail etccc
start an excel spreadsheet if that suits you better
back up back up backup
email the file/logins/passwords/whatever to your partners computer in case you die !!

jsut today helena asked me " do we own bla bla dot com au" and i had to do a whois to check :)

i had to check because i don't have to think about it as i have the above systems in place, but even i am guilty and need to do a spring clean.

you just forget, so 10 years is a longggggg time

I would really like to be able to register .com.au domains for a longer time frame. My most prized .com domains are registered for 10 years, with auto-renew annually to maintain the 10 year period - it's an excellent insurance policy ;)

It's a simple measure that can help protect the branding assets of a business.

Longer domain registrations have been accepted by the auDA Board. They just haven't been implemented. :( http://www.auda.org.au/news/auda-board-accepts-final-report-of-2010-names-policy-panel/

Implementation of the accepted recommendations will occur over the next few months and further details will be announced in due course. In the meantime, all current auDA Published Policies continue to apply.

Refer this previous thread and the letter I wrote to auDA (when I used to be in the chair at DNT) - and the subsequent response from Jo Lim at auDA.

https://www.dntrade.com.au/auda-policy-and-news/5343-letter-to-auda-board.html

Perhaps Erhan and Stu (now that they are directors) can follow this up?

Thanks Ned, I wasn't aware of the previously accepted recommendations... now if only they would implement it!

NOT directed at you Demonoid :)and i am trying to stay on track based on
now if only they would implement it!

if you are a member of auda then you have a vote, this means you can ask where potential candidates stand on issues you feel strongly about.

with elections coming up soon no doubt DNT will start to see threads and comments from candidates

except for erhan and simon ( constant candidate but not elected ) we really never see anyone else posting, NOTE: they will reply " ohh but we are always looking" and then add " but we are not at liberty to say very much "

reality is erhan and simon contribute often with good information that doesn't affect anything to do with auda.

we promoted membership last month on DNT so hopefully some people took note and joined.

hopefully candidates will start to show us what they stand for........ can't wait for the "i hate domainers email " :D

The thing is, you never hear from these people 11.5 months of the year. Then as soon as the election comes around its "oh I better post something on DNT". I'm sure that many DNT members can see through this.

Thanks Tim.

hopefully candidates will start to show us what they stand for........

Talk is cheap. How about judging people on their actions?

I'd be asking the current board members "In the past year, what tangible outcomes have you achieved that directly benefit me as an auDA member?" In other words, "What have you done for me lately?"

It's no secret that I've run for many years and will again run this year. I'm determined that the domain name industry will have a seat at the table.

I actually followed this up today with auDA. Apparently there have been some technical issues in relation to the implementation of this, and they have issued an update. I have bolded the relevant paragraph below.

Update on 2010 Names Policy Panel recommendations

In August 2011 the auDA Board accepted the final report of the 2010 Names Policy Panel, which recommended changes to a number of .au domain name policies.

The following recommendations were noted, pending further information from auDA staff regarding implementation issues:

  • That registrants should be able to license a domain name for a 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 year period.
  • That, in the absence of any compelling technical or policy reason to maintain the restriction, single character domain names should be released (subject to the registrant being eligible to register the name).

On the advice of auDA staff, the auDA Board has made the following decisions with respect to the two outstanding recommendations above:

That changing the domain name licence period to 1-5 years will be considered by the Board as part of arrangements for the new registry licence agreement post 30 June 2014. The reason is that changing the domain name licence period from the current fixed 2 year period would require changes to the registry database and pricing model, and therefore would not be able to be introduced under the terms of the current registry licence agreement with AusRegistry.

Barracuda.com.au

Barracuda.com.au could be a perfect name for someone in sales (or no win / no fee operators) who are looking at re-branding.

According to merriam-webster.com/dictionary/barracuda:

One that uses aggressive, selfish, and sometimes unethical methods to obtain a goal especially in business

Examples of BARRACUDA

The company's lawyers are a bunch of barracudas.

The governor-elect is too nice and easygoing, so he'll need a barracuda as his chief of staff.

Related Words

attack dog, hatchet man; aggressor, bully, shark; go-getter, hustler, live wire, self-starter; battler, fighter, scrapper; diehard, militant

Tongue in cheek of course. :D

cleanskin.com.au again dropped today

i seem to remember this name 2 years ago as i thought about wine as a potential market.

fact is before the auction it was sitting on netfleets dns.

so it begs the question, does NF send out renewal notices? because the whois points to a domain email address that is no longer active.

john@cleanskinkitchenware.com.au

the new owner should be happy, losing on FN at $500 and picking up for $23 on drop

Makes no difference really then if they send them or not if the email they are sent too is invalid anyway.
