.au Benchmark Survey

Hi guys/girls

Just thought I would flag this auDA/ausRegistry Survey with everyone. It is important that everyone complete the survey. Details below:

Melbourne, Australia – 25 February 2013: AusRegistry and the .au Domain Administration (auDA) today launched an online survey aimed at the broader Australian community, asking their opinions about the .au domain namespace.

The survey is the first of its kind in the .au namespace and is seeking 10,000 responses over three months to provide a baseline performance standard to measure against annually in future surveys.

A key element of the survey is an investigation into the domain name purchasing behaviour of Australian consumers. Anecdotal evidence suggests Australians exhibit a strong preference for .au domain names and trust it over other namespaces such as .com, .nz or .asia. The survey will also identify trends in .au domain name uptake using demographic data.

Another area of interest the survey will examine is the introduction of new generic Top-Level Domains later this year and what impact this might have on consumers and .au.

Annual surveys will benchmark .au against the data from this survey and it is hoped the results will provide reliable insights which can be used to dictate future marketing and education campaigns, and importantly help set new policy direction.

This year’s survey will be hosted on both the AusRegistry and auDA websites, as well as the websites of a number of accredited .au registrars who chose to participate. The survey will also be displayed across 500 of the most popular websites in Australia with a potential exposure to 21 million unique browsers per month.

AusRegistry and auDA encourage interested participants to complete the survey.

The survey is being conducted by global market research company Effective Measure and will run until the end of May 2013. A summary of the results is expected to be released later this year.

The survey can be accessed here: Survey

Thanks for sharing. I've just done the survey now and in case anyone is wondering it's pretty quick and easy to complete. Hopefully everyone can spare a few minutes of their time to contribute to help make the data representative. Looking forward to seeing the results :)

It's always going to be a bias survey.

It's like going to a football match and surveying the crowd and asking them:

1. Do you like football
2. Would you watch a live match

etc.

I do think it's a good idea to gather info, but the questions seemed a little pointless to me.

You need to remember that it isn't a domainer's survey, but rather an industry survey which is why some of the questions such as reasons for choosing a .au domain and what the domain is used for, will be useful to Registrars / auDA, in promoting the domain space, which ultimately benefits the whole industry including domainers! Just my 5 cents :)

Johno you have point about publicity, that was one of the main reasons I wanted to get the word out. Tell your friends particularly NON domainers - we need a broad spread of respondents.

Just re-read what Erhan posted and I don't think publicity is going to be an issue if the survey is being displayed across the 500 of the most popular websites in Australia?

They talked about this a bit at the most recent Ausregistry conference and I think it is going to be very interesting to see how many people know about the secondary market.

They also spoke about running the survey again after a period of time so that they can measure if there is any change, that will be even more interesting to see.

I was hoping it would ask about the length of registrations, this needs to changed .......longer. How many of the drops would not happen if there was a ten year option ?

They can run it across 10 million websites if they like. My point was, if you have no interest, or "My web guy does that stuff for me", then you wont complete it anyway.

If they put a survey for "bus transport" on a site you frequent, would you even care? More so would you take the time to complete it? That was what I was getting at. Easy for us to complete it as we are in the industry.

Either way, will be great to see the results.

Yeah in the real world nothing is perfect or easy, but it is still a worthwhile exercise.

I think the Effective Measure guys do know what they are doing and I think they said that only fully completed surveys are counted. So they are going to have to convince 10 000 people to complete the survey. I think 1/2 of those responses need to come from the popular websites and not from auda/ausreg websites. So there is going to be a good balance to this survey.

I like the fact that lots of the questions had the option "My web guy does that for me" or "I dunno I never paid the invoice" so that these types of responses can be captured.
