.co.nz strategy

i'm not sure if this has been mentioned before but has it been considered that if you have good "australia wide" business concept that owning the .co.nz could be good value if you are simply able to do the same thing over there?

small market but i look at it as another "sydney" in total.

i saw some really good .co.nz's drop over the past few days without any attention being paid to them, not in my sector so i don't bother but i don't think we should disregard the .co.nz as it seems we do.

snoppy you can stay out of this as we all know what you will say so you can save your time.

i've just hand reg a few of my au's with the .co.nz that i plan to expand into NZ, not to mention when i go over there its a tax deduction ,
R & D ya know.

has any one else got some similar strategies?

yeah I've hand regged some .co.nz that I paid a mint for the AU equivelant at times. eCommerce is a hard nut to crack there though, with the Warehouse being a big monopoly and all. Less affiliate channels too. But many good lucrative niches to be had due to low competition.

my neighbour owns the local chinese restaurant, he has a mercedes in the garage, 2 lexus's and a prado on the front lawn.

there is money everywhere, lets not ignore NZ

Doesn't seem to be a very liquid resale market. There are some sales, just at a much, much lower price point.

If you're looking at resale, I would only target the very best terms, I've seen people struggle to move their inventory of what would be very decent domains in other extensions.

Worth a punt? Possibly, but even more emphasis on quality over quantity.

I have two that I bought for brands that may target that market. If you're buying because you are or would like to tap into the NZ market - sure, go for it. But for investment and resale, personally I would look elsewhere.

Just my two cents for what it's worth.

I watch .co.nz a little bit and have picked up a few names.

as for not being much of a market quite a few .co.nz domains have sold for decent prices.

demoniod and xwdomains both make good points.

there are some good investments over there, this has only call forward for me since NF put all its drops in the 1 place, up till now i haven't really looked at the nz snapper.

I'm not a fan anymore. Used to be though.

Why?

1. Small resale market.
   
   
2. Resale prices way lower than Australia. e.g. As per xwdomains post, deals.co.nz sold for $4k - deals.com.au sold for $100k.
   
   
3. Market is going to be further diluted if they open up the second-level i.e. deals.nz (This has been out for public consultation already).

The Domain Name Commission Limited (DNCL) would like your views on a proposal that has the potential to significantly alter New Zealand’s domain name space.

Having said that, I would still protect my main Aussie domains by registering the equivalent NZ names.

Opinions about .co.nz,

It is a small market & not a wealthy market, nothing like Australia really. They are in a 1980's timewrap due to poor economic growth over many years. So NZ isn't like another Sydney in terms of market size.

For a company actually shipping products they face somewhat high postage charges, higher number of parcels going missing, longer shipping times, plus it will be a harder pitch if they know the item is coming from Australia. So it is not like just expanding to another Australian city.

The .co.nz domain market has always been poor, much lower pool of buyers, if the population is a 1/5th the buying power is probably more like 1/10th.

I actually registered some .co.nz domains a few years ago, but ones related to travel and tourism in Australia, given that New Zealand is Australia's biggest source of overseas visitors.

I'm paying about double the renewal cost of an Aussie .com.au for each of them to keep them registered.

I do think it's pointless to register something so generic as queensland.co.nz (which someone has already done) as obviously Queensland isn't in New Zealand. But Tourism Queensland, which has it's official Aussie site at queenslandholidays.com.au, is also the owner of queenslandholidays.co.nz, and they have created a very similar site to their Aussie version.

So I wonder if some Australian organisations are either buying NZ domains for:

1) Brand protection across the Tasman Sea
2) To create a New Zealand-ised version of their site for that market

By the way, Tourism NSW & Victoria haven't bothered to grab visitnsw.co.nz or visitvictoria.co.nz, although Tasmania, SA, WA and NT have grabbed the co.nz domains equivalent to their Aussie ones. And of course Tourism Australia have grabbed australia.co.nz.

i've plan to move into the nz market soon, decided that 6 years ago but now its time, in those 6 years my 3 biggest australian competitors in this sector have not registered their .co.nz.

i honestly have been dealing with morals to stop myself from registering THEIR equivalent .co.nz , thus making it harder for them to come in.

but its been 6 years !!!! "do i don't i" ?

If they don't have a trademark on the term and its generic I would say do it

they have had 6 years
