Can You Complete A COR On An Expired Domain

I was just playing around in my NetFleet account today looking into the COR process it seemed like it was possible to complete a COR on an expired domain if it hasn't been expired for 30 days.

Obviously I had no reason to transfer a recently expired domain, but I was interested to know if this is even possible?

At Netfleet there is currently no limitation preventing you from having an auction end the "30 day grace period", and we are able to process the COR on an expired domain too.

You are able to transfer to another registrar during this period, at Netfleet we allow you to transfer during this period without renewals.

So you could in theory auction domains which have expired and are at another registrar, then at the auction end you can completed a Transfer and Change of Registrant all for $18.43 (Just leave at least 7 days at the end as we need to allow for the 48hour transfer period and the paperwork)

Some registrars insist on a transfer plus renewal if there is more than 90 days until expiry... so yes if you transferred to them and then did a COR it would cost you twice and you never get to see the benefit of the renewal.

You do not need to pay twice! You only pay for the COR (which always includes 2 years registration) the transfer between registrars is free (even during the 30 day grace period)

The only time I have insisted that a registrant does a transfer and renew was when a domain was within 8 HOURS of being placed on the official drop list. For the record when a domain is within 48 hours of getting on the drop list and it gets transferred there is a special state it goes into so that the transfer is completed or cancelled before it goes onto the list. This special state allows you to do a transfer and renew on a domain in the final moments.

All this having being said I think it is worth pointing out that if you play around with getting too close to the end of the 30 day window you do run a serious risk of losing your domain name so do not try this on your prized domain name you hand registered 10 years ago and is worth millions.

Be safe and renew domains if you think they are worth more than a few bucks!

VentraIP claim it's not possible to do a COR on an expired .au domain.

I am waiting on clarification from auDA.

It must be a limitation of the Ausregistry portal because the option isn't available on expired domains, only renew or delete.
