I predict you'll get some good metrics but .net.au makes it harder to value...

Thanks Scott the local and exacts phrase aren't exactly spectacular

However I only submitted to google last night and has already ranked in top 20

free web host and brought in a couple of direct signups:)

Great! Good stuff :D Looks like you're on a winner then, especially if you can convert your free customers to paid ones.

Bad extension, term itself is borderline unviable in my view. I can imagine people bidding on it but what sort of site can really be made out of the domain? $0.

Love it. Seriously want to meet you one day snoopy. You're upfront, to the point with your knowledge. :)
One of my favourite areas of your postings are the evaluations at the end. :D

The main source of revenue for 'free web hosting' is upselling 'customers' to paid hosting or by deploying ads on their domain or by selling website building technology or templates.

There are a number of players who have been making a fair bit of cash doing it.

webs.com is just an example

Have seen quite a few listings on flippa et al over the years from smaller players.

So you've got 300 searches a month for a term where the aim is to give something away for free in the hope of an up sell. What kind of revenue is a site targeting that term going going to produce?

I don't think this site is going to produce more than one paying customer a month assuming it is well ranked & efficiently run. Would anyone run a business for $5 a month? I think not.

Hi Snoopy, I didn't mention anything about local search volumes. I was just referring to monetizing the visitors :)

I happen to agree with you about the extension; it is not so helpful in this instance. He'd need it to rank in global searches to be effective and even then, I think the .net.au extension might hurt his CTR in the serps.

I wouldn't value this domain highly. Perhaps max of $100 to the right end user, having said that, I wouldn't pay that for it.

I happen to agree the local monthly are not that strong however it already is running as a free web host and has made back $24
and is already ranking quite well....

freewebhost.net sold for 1500

free web hosting sites with adsense placed on users sites make $xxxx-xx,xxx

This site bought in 7 sign ups on first day of launching so lets take that as 7 sign ups per day you would have after 1 year you would have 6300 web hosting customers displaying your adsense ads even if every site only earns $1 a month you return is $75300 with no upgrades....

Hi xwdomains,

If it is making you regular money and not costing you much in terms of upkeep or time, then your earnings would be a better guide to the value of your website rather than the domain on its own. That is a great start, certainly better than the stats from google suggest.

Cheers,

Brad

Agreed.

I wouldn't pay reg fee for this domain. Too much effort for a potential payoff of $100 minus expenses.

i steer away from the word "free" unless its conditional eg" free trial" but free forever? you can't come back from that, you need to make sure your conditions are well set.

ironic is that i was JUST reviewing one of my new sites ( not completed yet) and have found that businesses are already starting to list on the directory when its supposed to be blocked ! !!!!!

stuff knows how they found me i haven't been trying ! but they've all taken the free listing and i haven't completed the terms yet. each listing was meant to be "admin approved" (me)

my programmer is about to get a kick in the bum

.net.au makes no sense for a global site. Doubt it is going to rank in a meaningful way on Google.com.

It is ranking 45th for me. As for it potentially making $75,300 in a year? I don't even believe the $24 claim.

I sold freesex.com.au about 18 months ago.

The person who bought it got a great buy, as it has huge search and a good CPC.

But I always chuckle when I think of that name - there is definitely no such thing as "free sex"! We pay one way or the other. ;)

it ranked 20 for free web host and 13 for free webhost yesterday seems to be a bit lower today nothing a little bit of seo can not fix

so you don't think it is possible to make 75k a year having your adsense ads on 6300 websites. and that is quite low for a free webhost btw after 12months.
