Don't You Hate It When...

Don't you hate it when, you let some domains expire and then people go and spend a few hundred buying them in the expiry auctions when you had previously offered them for sale for cheaper...

I used to own...

LosingWeightFast.com.au - $312
Matress.com.au - $112

I irony is both those domains were listed as for sale here on DnTrade - I was only asking $87 for LosingWeightFast.com.au don't think I had a price for Matress.com.au but I would have taken $50 for sure.

If only those people had of approached me prior to the auctions they could have got themselves a bargain.

Oh well... everyone's loss except NetFleet and Drop

:p

Yep, that does suck.

It's interesting how motivations change between aftermarket and expiry. Some domains get caught for more than they'd sell for, other names get sold that few would bother trying to catch.

I think it's purely due to the auction process. With an auction, there's incentive to buy otherwise you'll miss out completely. With a catalogue listing there's no pressure to buy.

It certainly happens.

I had a property website that I offered to a few different real estate agents and developers for $5,000. There were a few nibbles, but no sale.

About six months later I put it on Flippa and emailed all of the agents and developers to let them know. One of the property developers who knocked it back previously ended up buying it at auction for $9,000.

There's certainly something about auctions that work well, but in saying that you really need to have the right bidders. It only takes one serious bidder to be involved or not involved to change the result dramatically.

Ok - here's another thing to think about as well, some people are new to this, unless of course it was sold to someone who is an experienced domainer and perhaps overlooked it.
And, sometimes you miss forum posts as well. I did see that losingweightfast.com.au domain and thought it was a good one, but alas, I am not in the position yet to be bidding more than just a few dollars on domain names.

I am working up to it. And yes it is a shame.

Oops!... sorry Chris – that would be me!
I have to admit I don’t look at catalogue or aftermarket listings on sales/auction sites or even sales threads on forums. More fool me! There are obviously some better deals to be had. Important lesson.
But I’m also a big believer in the one day auction process for trying to maximise sales price. Started a thread a little while ago (badly worded and only half thought through) about whether it would be possible for domainers to add domains that they were considering not renewing to NFs snapper auctions (or similar).
I think I’ve accidentally partly proved my own point about how it could work in some circumstances.
So.... If a domainer was willing sell a domain that they weren’t going to renew for $87, but when advertised no domainers were interested, but another domainer was willing to pay $312 for it at a snapper auction (albeit a newbie probably paying way too much – but not the only one, someone must have bid $311), how much could the original domainer have possibly made if a) they could have added it to NFs snapper auction and split proceeds of sale and b) they whipped up some end user interest as well?
Just thinking out loud from a domainers point of view about different ways to make a quid.
One sure way to lose a quid is to pay $312 for something that was for sale for $87

No problem.

What I couldn't understand why losingweightfast.com.au sold for $312 but howtoloseweightquickly.com.au didn't even get a bid even though they have similar metrics...

Anyway Pierso if you are looking for good domains in any particular niche you can always feel free to send me an email, I have quite a few domains in all sorts of niches that I have never got around to developing that I probably need to sell so I can focus on my other sites. And I'll be pretty negotiable given I get nothing if I just drop them...

If anyone is interested send me a PM with the sorts of domains you are after.
