University Domains

You might have noticed a bunch of university domains expiring today that are PD, even generic names like

UniversityScholarship.com.au
AustralianUniversityJobs.com.au

We got caught with a few uni names a few years back not realising there's a specific policy that covers them

Sounds like a strange set of rules given there is a lot of legitimate possibilities for names with university in them.

It actually relates to company and business names too, not just domains.

Under the Corporations Act 2001 (Cth) and regulations, people forming companies are prevented from using the word “university” or letters, words or expressions of like import to the word including abbreviations such as “uni” unless they obtain permission first from the Department of Education, Science and Training (DEST). Similarly, under the various state and territory business names acts, businesses cannot register a name that uses the word “university” or letters, words or expressions of like import unless they obtain permission first from the relevant state/territory regulator.

PS: This rule obviously does not relate to gTLD such as .com, .net, etc...

I think there is also a prohibition on registering business names with the word 'Charity' in it. Unless of course you have some sort of official charity status.

Does anyone know if there is a specific restriction on registering the word 'charity' within a .com.au domain. I don't imagine, but I thought I'd ask seeing the university example came up.
