If i put a read more "continue reading" button on a post which is a sticky post on a wordpress site, does goggle still crawl the hidden content?

From testing I do not believe they preference this very well these days. Was not always the case. You are better off showing all content.

Interesting question. I've noticed a few big overseas news websites doing this, although it seems to only happen when the article is accessed via a shared link on Facebook...?

I was under the impression Google didn't like it.

i don't know but some rules should still apply:
you have to grab the visitor quickly so put your best stuff first, this should be keyword rich.
the end goal is to keep the visitor isn't it?
homepage page load is important so short snippets rather then mountains of text is better.
a homepage that looks like a just text will bounce quickly IMO
short snippets allows you to put more variety on homepage relative to the subject giving you more keywords.
