Lake St Clair - my first .com.au geo

Officially my first .com.au geo domain.

I've got heaps of .com geos (mainly Europe, but also some Australian destinations - one of which is launching soon), but I have no experience with .com.au domains in this space.

LakeStClair (dot com dot au)

  • The stats are 4,400 exact global monthly searches, 1,000 exact local (Australia) monthly searches on Google (GAKT) for the term: Lake St Clair
  • Australia's deepest lake, well known tourist destination and the end point of the 'Overland Track', arguably Australia's most famous hiking trail.

It seemed like a good acquisition to me, but what do you think?

Particularly keen to get some feedback from those involved in the .com.au geo space.

There are several Lake St Clair's

Tasmania, NSW, SA & USA; so confusion is an issue

May also be an opportunity?

$0. Where is the commercial element in it? It is not without resale potential to people with similar names but I would not be developing this & I think the resale potential is low. Fails the radio test and multiple locations with the same name.

Thanks for the feedback Snoopy.

Would be looking at development rather than resale. One project has all of my focus right now (and will do into next year), so if I do anything on this it wouldn't be for quite some time.

I agree, the radio test is an issue on this one.

As an aside, what's your view on Australian geos in the .com extension? Do you think these are worth developing or investing in?

Development - I think only if they are widely known overseas and principally seen as tourist areas, ie whole city just revolves around tourism. I can't think of an example off the top of my head, I think very few names would fit into that category. There is very little money in most geos in my view.

Investing wise I'd say they'd need to be very strong terms to be worthwhile, the types of names that would appeal to tourism boards and the like, other than that the market is going to be domainers in my view, and most will see it as the wrong extension.

Thanks for the insights, much appreciated.

Looking at your comments I can see that I've already broken some of those rules with a couple of domains! I haven't been involved in the Australian geo area in the past, so not a lot of money spent on domains at this point.

I should have noted that for Australian geos I'm looking almost entirely at development rather than resale.

From your feedback and Acheeva's this domain isn't looking like a good candidate for development.

I noted your comment about there not being a lot of money in geos. I guess I'll find out soon enough as I'm making a big push in this area with an Australian site this year/early next and a Euro site mid-next year.

I've seen the model work, but it takes a lot of planning and resources. I've been planning and working on the Aus site for nearly two years, hopefully it pays off. Time will tell!

2 years?? I think that massively raises the risk of a site not working out, say the site need s a complete rethink?

It is also 2 years it could potentially have been getting some traction with search engines. Would be getting it up ASAP, whatever you have done. I did know one guy who was planning a site for years, I don't think he ever got the site up. TAKE IMMEDIATE ACTION, that is my advice.

Thanks Snoopy, I agree the time is now. I've been waiting to get to this point for what seems like an eternity.

I should clarify that the actual development work on the site only started in the last six months. Most of the other time was spent getting all my 'ducks in a row' so to speak, and an earlier launch wasn't feasible.

The site is scheduled for a cold launch early November, promoted launch early December.

The work that's been done on this site will also be leveraged across a few other projects later next year, so in a sense it's been a process of building up resources, capabilities and a platform that can be used across a number of sites.

Best of luck with the launch, perhaps post the name here if you can.

Recent Geo Sales:

Hobart.com.au = $65,000
CentralCoast.com.au = $22,000 (hand reg'd)

I'd love to know which industries you think are worth money Snoopy .

Reread what I said, the sentence you have taken nicely out of context relates to developing geos (esp australian geo .com's), the quote has nothing at all to do with what you are talking about which is reselling names geo .com.au's.

How can you be taken out of context when I quoted you within the actual context? That's pretty much the definition of being in-context.

But I welcome your clarification and that I acted nicely. ;)

You took a quote from a paragraph clearly labeled as about "Development" and pretended the quote was about investing, then you ignored the paragraph where I gave my views about investing directly afterwards. Even then the discussion was mainly about australia geo .com names. You'd do well on today tonight.

Lol. Sorry Snoopy, I apologise unreservedly. I don't know about today tonight though - maybe Federal politics?

now its sold I will add to this, we have a domain that is "Richmond ...service " and there is a Richmond in every state !

SO its a mindfield of analytics as it has a high bounce rate which we figure is because we have the Victorian telephone number in the header very large "03 ......."

still trying to work it all out and hoping google geo is helping but the forth ranked site is from NSW so maybe its not?
