Thanks to Chris Barron of Viva9, I have 1 x double pass (worth over $1,000) to give away to Affili@SYD 2011.

This will be held at the Menzies Hotel, Sydney on Wednesday June 22nd. This includes full conference access,
morning & afternoon tea, a buffet lunch and cocktail reception.

It was a very informative day, the one thing that sticks out for me was the presentation by styletread.com.au who were only set up in around Oct 2010 and are getting 500,000
traffic per month to their site and have sold a share to the Channel Nine entertainment group for 4 million. It just shows that you can still come into a particular niche very late in the piece and still become its biggest player.
It makes you think what other niches are sitting their ready to be plucked by smart operators ?

I believe they leverage this launch from their brandsexclusive site. Or is it buyinvite? I can't remember. But they marketed to a very large database right off the bat.

In Australia... virtually all of them.

They had a HUGE marketing budget - my good friend runs one of Australia's larger fashion sites and I know they were throwing thousands of dollars a month at him for banner advertisements.

That said, I think now they have an established market presence I think they are significantly reducing their marketing budget and are trying to reap the rewards of being marketing leader.

Their shipping & returns policies have also helped them be so successful
But I'm pretty sure they they just flogged these from zappos and other international retailers.

I don't think styletread have done anything particularly revolutionary other then just do the simple things right coupled with good marketing.

A lot of Australian companies would do very well to follow international best practices when it comes to establishing an online site and brand. We here in Australia are still a couple of years behind.

It's well known that free shipping is a major contributor towards increasing conversion rates, but in AU this seems to be a rarity rather than the norm.

I'm also sceptical when you hear success stories like these in small amounts of time. I remember when Big Brown Box was kicking goals according to NETT magazine.. only to close down a few month later after bleeding THORN dry. Although I see they have relaunched now.
