Over at WP there's a topic regarding a "Lost Domain".

http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=1819833

Story goes:
  • Domain renewal notice was issued
  • Domain renewal paid
  • Domain not renewed
  • Registrant noticed 9 month later domain wasn't renewed
  • Domain purchased by third party and now "For Sale"

The discussion goes on about responsibility etc.

To the registrars credit they are trying to recover the domain.

I thought it may be of interest to some here..

I lost a premo domain at the beginning of last year.
Paid to transfer domain to new host.
Host sent email to OLD email to confirm transfer.
Old email WAS NOT WORKING.
Didn't receive email.
Didn't give it much more thought till a couple of months later.
GONE. LOST.
The host provider had a secondary email on file they didn't send anything to this email.
Domain purchased by new owner through netfleet $2500

I'll make sure that NEVER happens again!!!!

Been there; done that. Or something similar. Sometimes it has been my own fault. :(

What it comes down to is that if you are a serious domainer, you have to try and have good systems in place. Don't rely on others.

They always send to the registrant email you have set. If that's not working you only have yourself to blame.

That's a bit different to the case over at WP.

i've been VERY close to loosing domains since i started transfering them to a cheaper registra ( it serves no purpose to say who ).

Now i religiously check the transfers, i use a simply way, i host all my domains and don't park any, i change the index.html file slightly like adding in an extra couple of full stops or purposely creating a spelling mistake, this way i know the domain has been moved and renewed.

also i have a special email for them all domains@blablabla.com and all notifications go there.

also i have all my domains in a "recurring invoice" in my quickbooks accounting software so it pops up a warning there as well.

so my bottom line is , you have to check the domains straight after the renewal date, thats why they have a window where you can fix the issue easily
