changing domain keys

i just sold a domain, only my 3rd ever i think but i know now i wont get a chance to develop it so i was made an offer , BUT as i am so inexperienced in selling domains i realised that i give the domain key to the person so they can transfer it BUT if they don't change the key then i could easily transfer it back again !!! not that i would.
which leads me to all the domains i have purchased could be transferred away as i've never changed a key.
what does everyone else do?

You still need to approve the transfer via email.
If they also don't update the contact details then they are stupid.

How do I transfer a .com? (I've transferred .com.au before, but not .com).

i haven't purchase/sold/moved a .com in MANY years, but i think the rules still apply.
and there are many questions that need answering:
transfer : ? transfer registrant? you own it and want to move it
sold: you have to give it to someone as you sold it?
purchase: you just bought one?

transfer: you own it, just phone the new registrar you have an account with and they will walk you through it.
sold: use an escrow for payment security
purchase use an escrow for payment security

either way it all just rests with someone providing the "domain key to the other person"
once you have done that there is no coming back !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks Tim - I am selling a domain. Payment is low so I'm not worried about escrow.

Many registrars offer an 'account change' or 'account push', which is even easier and faster. Say for example your domain is registered with GoDaddy, you can push the domain to another GoDaddy account holder.

As it's free to sign up for a new registrar account (usually), you could just get the buyer to create an account at your registrar (having first confirmed that the registrar has an 'account push' option of course) - then push the domain to their account (after they've paid you of course! ).

Update: here's the GoDaddy instructions as an example (naturally the settings/process will vary a lot between registrars)

It won't be free though- like .com.au

Normally You will need to pay one year fee

demoniod as i haven't done it either , are you saying there can be no need for a COR on a .com if you use " Many registrars offer an 'account change' or 'account push'," ????
surely there is a fee ( meaning more then just 1 year renewal ) or a validation?

No fee, the domain retains the current registration period. Once the new owner has the domain in their account, they can change the whois/contact details to whatever they like.

As noted by asantha, regular transfer will attract a fee (one year reg fee typically)
