Note a couple of important exclusions:

1) No domains that are in pending delete status at the time of backorder
2) Orders will only kick in at 5pm the following day (so don't bother trying to backorder Domain8's or DW's lists! This is meant to be a different service to that not a competing one!!)

Nice work on this new service, can you tell me, is this when the domain expires and before it goes into Pending Delete?
So if I had say coffsharbour.com.au on backorder and it expired, the service would snap it before it goes into pending delete and on its way to domain8 and DW. I'm just trying to get my head around what the service does that is different to the other one's?

Hi Don,

Yes you can backorder a domain at any stage except if it's in pending delete. However I think you are confused in that not many domains go into pending delete. If a domain expires normally, it goes into a state called 'renew prohibited' for 24hrs prior to release. These are generally the names you see on D8 and DW (plus the PD and CD ones)

And we can't snap them before they make their way onto these lists - no one can.

So, for example if you had backordered kingscliff.com.au last week it might have only cost you $12.95!

We might not have snapped it of course - give the healthy competition on that particular name. However because we're not chasing lists of 40 or 50 every day, we should have a good chance of getting most backordered domains if they do indeed become available.

The best way to use it, from a domainer's perspective, would be to try and analyse a likely list of valuable domains that have a 'reasonable' probability of expiring. If you can estimate that probability and estimate the value, it's then just a mathematical question of whether Prob x Value < Backorder Fee

One way to look at it I guess....

From a retail perspective (eg small business) it's an opportunity for someone to backorder a name they may have coveted for years. Perhaps it's a great generic name that nobody's used & despite trying to make contact they've never had a response. These people aren't going to check the drop lists every day.

But from a domainer's perspective there's value too - even for the bigger names.

Eg if you knew that mortgage.com.au had expired, you know is has a very real chance to drop within 30 days, so you'd happily spend the $12.95 to 'cover' it.

Even if it hadn't expired but was unresolved or owned by a business that had just gone bust etc, you might estimate it has a 1 in 1000 chance of dropping, say. Then if you value it at $50,000, say it's worth paying $12.95 (because 50,000/1000 is greater than $13)

So it's useful if you can do the research and are confident of estimating both probabilities and values.

Thanks for your comments. Spacey, the answer to your question is easy - we've changed the pricing. Like anything completely new, it's hard to figure out what would be a good price point but after changing, we've obviously forgotten to update the blurb. Will fix up today.

Hadhad - yes I can understand you've lost faith in it. I would too to be honest. Your incident was isolated though and in the very early days of the service. And of course we refunded the fee.

Thankfully we've gotten a lot better at it since then! Last week we snapped a few that had bidding in the mid $100's on DW and Drop so they would have been pretty competitive. Got the top spot on both DW and Drop on Friday too

Snapper is a gamble, there's no 2-ways about it. But as we get better and better, the odds get more and more attractive!!

I believe you're referring to where it says as low as $11.99 per year.

This is based on 5 years at $59.95

59.95/5=11.99

Yes and the reg fee is fairly high, around $45 i believe.

NetRegistry is about the 8th cheapest.
