First domain purchase - opinions welcomed

As you know I have just got into domaining and have made contact with a member who is selling 630 names in one go...

I did some homework and think I could develop 4 of the names and was wondering about your opinions. The names are $150 each + fees. Any POV/opinions/feedback appreciated. With my domain budget I was hoping to buy 4 or so quality domains but these sorts iof names would be 'stocking-fillers'...

as you are "green" here's some hints, not an opinion.

search for google adwords tool and learn it, its no gaurantee and i pay little attention to it when pricing domains that i want to develop, but its interesting info. exacts, broad, phrase

next, do a search on dnt on what others think about .net.au names

ANY domain can make you money if developed and have skills so your purchase is up to you.

if i was going to buy MDcards sprint then i'd want a connection with the print industry or have found some good affilaite programs, same for xmas....

i think they all need good SEO to succeed so if thats your skill go for it.

i think chris said the other day "flearn" fail and learn, search for that thread and watch the video.

"fail cheap" is another good one, i'm really trying to not be a spoiler here but my honest advice is buy 1 and make it work, then come back for more.

Fastest way to get up to speed on domain values is to study the prices on the drops daily.

What is your business model? How are you going to make money?

My business model is just to develop the sites until a bigger name wants to buy the business & associated domain.

The seller stated "they're a 4yr to 6yr life cycle on value from now, but definitely worth the money." so I am keen to get cracking before anyone else does as the internet moves fast and I dont want to be the one telling people about the catch that got away...

I know the member you are referring too, I reccomend you do business with him as he is a honest seller, but in my eyes I would ask him to sell you say 1 x name for around $800 range rather then buying 4 names for $600, I think you can make better ROI off 1 good name rather than 4 average names..

Everyone will have a different opinion and you'll get lots of them here

My 2c would be to definitely take your time and do your research. If possible, pick areas or topics that you really enjoy (or you really know are profitable) since you'll be spending lots of time working on your sites.

I agree things move fast, but that also means there are new opportunities that appear every day.

There are plenty of people here to help you and give you ideas and support, it's great that you're keen and seeking advice. That's a huge step in the right direction.

James' idea of looking at the next level up in terms of quality is solid advice.

Keep your money in your pocket and read solidly for a good 2 month or so, then go spend some money.

DNTrade is already established and far to many international forums on domain monetization

Both these will take lots of work to monetize. Seasonal and single day event domains sound good in theory but dont always go down very well for just a casual developer.

I would look to acquire one good name instead of several sub par names.

For $600 you should be able to pick up and already established site you could monetize better that's already making some revenue.

You won't know how valuable domain is until you drop you first one so go ahead and give it a shot.

Everybody who is here have been through this phase and they are still around because they've learned from the experience.
