I've spent many a night enjoying pizza and pasta (and a few bottles of red) on Lygon during numerous grand prix weekends over the years. Good food and wine plus Ferraris parked along the street. Gold!

$300 was good value for this one I reckon, but you'd need to put a lot of time into developing it if you wanted a decent return. Could you claim nights out on Lygon St as a tax deduction for 'research'...? :D

tax deduction: TOTALLY, thats why i bought toorak road and bridge road !

research, meetings, taking snaps to update the website, food critic, wine critic, best restuarants, tips for the visitor etccccc , why do you think "master chef" travel to italy to shoot a few weeks of episodes? ..... because the CAN and write it off.

i think the way it goes is if you are a soletrader you can only offset claims against income of that website but if you are a company then you can offset claims to ANY income you get ( eg other income sources ) and put it down to R&D , but i wouldn't do anything without consulting an accountant ( which by the way never forget "accountants are not accountable ! " )

i'm of the belief that australians are trained to .com.au, so either make it rank or its a second class domain

Here's another example of a street website:

http://www.racecourseroad.com.au

It's no Lygon Street, but it is a popular strip here in Brisbane. Unfortunately it's getting overrun by apartment complexes, but there are still a few good restaurants along there.

Yeah it is a lot, but it seems to work. 15k was the price Nova FM quoted for 2 weeks radio advertising, but that wasn't even for those prime time slots before and after the news updates.

Didn't even get a look in with those slots, they are booked way in advance

Not really sure how this would be developed into something with a viable business model, probably has value to a traders association but I'm not sure it is a great name to develop on its own.

theres a few people trying it across the country but without the support of the traders assoc you could be dead in the water.

but if you can get your site to rank higher then eg: if i owned fitzroystreet.com.au ( which i don't) then you could take A LOT of cream off them from their radio ads.

snoopys .net example in practice.

but if you create a quality site which ranks you will get people moving over to it, especially as those trade assoc charge a fortune and there is ALWAYS "in fighting". So offer a good alternative and you will see cracks in the walls.

If the site ranked well I still don't see why advertisers would pay. To take the fitzroystreet example fitzroystreet.net ranks no.2. It has plenty of info about how to advertise yet has a grand total of zero advertisers. The same company looks to have 30 similar sites for different streets and I can't see a single advertiser on any of those either.

I do not think being a member of a traders association is mainly about internet advertising, so another site ranking well doesn't cause any cracks in my view as it really isn't an alternative to being in the association. Small cafes/hairdressers/bakeries etc don't care much about web presence, nor should they. It would be a rare occasion that they would actually pay to be listed on a local type site. They might pay some small fee to maintain their own site, but they aren't going to pay just to advertise on some local site. The connection to sales is too vague in my view.

I agree mostly with your view snoopy, the .net.au guy owns a fair few domains like this and seems to have put a mountain of work into them and yes I can,t see they are getting a return.

Back to the original point in that Lygon is still worth more then 350 bucks

I don't know, what would it be used for other than another failed local site attempt? Resale it might have potential for sale to the traders association but they probably won't have much of a budget and that is one buyer. Even in Google there isn't an advertiser on the term.

If it is worth more than $350 how come it ended there? Every man and his dog follows the drops, at the end of the day nobody was willing to bid higher.

Of course everyone would pay $1000 until it comes to actually handing over the cash......
