Getting Private Advertisers

It is recently become apparent to me that I have a site that gets a reasonable amount of traffic a month (500 uniques) by due to low competition and bid prices, both the CTR and CPC of the AdSense ads is rather poor.

However the product that the site is about sells for $500 - $2000. So I find it hard to believe that sellers of the product wouldn't be willing to spend at least a few dollars on advertising if you could generate them a bit of business.

So this led me to my next question, how should one go about contacting sellers and businesses to place private ads on the site?

Does anyone have any templated e-mail they send out?

Or does anyone at lease have any tips about how to best get private advertisers interested?

I was also wondering what sort of benefits and features you could offer a private advertiser?

I was also wondering how people went about managing these private ad deals?

I was thinking of trying to get the advertisers on recurring PayPal subscription. What do you guys think?

Another big question is how much do you charge? And on what payment structure?

Hi CNC... I can't address all your questions but as I read through it one online advertising company sprung to mind - buysellads.com.

Have a look at what they offer - I haven't used them yet (have ear marked them for a few sites in development) but have seen their ads around a lot and it seems to be in line with what you are looking for.

I was going to suggest buysellads as well but didn't realise the minimum requirement either.

My question would be this: What advantage does the advertiser gain from advertising on your site? It sounds like it's a site about their product already so how would them advertising make a difference seeing as there's already links to buy their product

I think you'll struggle with traffic flow of 500 per month to get direct advertisers. If the CPC is low why is that? Ditto for CTR?

Are the advertisers going to get a better deal going direct to you rather than through Google? it needs to be compelling. Adsense pays out 68% so is it really worth trying to take direct ads on a small site?

The CTR isn't terrible, 3% - 5%. It's just the CPC is very low <$0.10.

I assume this is due to the limited number of advertisers and the fact that most advertisers would probably be targeting specific locations.

Obviously I can't offer "better" than Google, what I would be offering is a "more of the same" kind of deal. In that, just like Google, I can drive traffic to their site, but for a fixed monthly fee.

I'd also be able to throw in the leads the site generates, SEO value of links, exposure via images etc that Google doesn't offer.

I'm not saying that is an amazing offer but my thinking was if the price is right and it offers a genuine ROI to the seller then they should be semi-interested.

For me it's just about trying to squeeze out an extra few dollars from the site.

I might only be able to charge $20 a month for placing a small banner in the navigation, but that $20 a month is $240 over a year which helps justify the initial investment into the site.

Plus I also look at acquiring advertisers as relationship development, given that ultimately I would be happy to sell the site to an end user. So if I could prove to advertisers that the site has value they would be more inclined to purchase the site outright in the future.

I think you need to drive awareness that you are selling advertising banners and what not. Also in regards to email templates, make them to cater your niche. I made two today for a client different niche means u need to make it different and more personal...if it looks standard it won't work.

I've had direct advertisers on quite a few of my sites over the years. Most of them contacted me and we worked out a deal between us. I don't have a formula for what to charge, but I just get a feel for what the advertiser's budget is and go from there.

The most success I've had from direct advisertising was just doing the good old sales thing and getting in contact with people. You'll get 99 knock backs for every 100 businesses you contact, but as long as you're charging a decent rate it should be worthwhile.

I have to agree with the others though, 500 uniques is a pretty low figure to be pitching to prospective advisers. I reckon you need at least 100 per day to make anyone take notice.

Have you considered setting up an enquiry form and generating leads? You may find it easier to sell leads rather than advertising space. This has certainly been my experience when dealing directly with other businesses.
